In this post we’ll look at grammar and meaning related to the very common Portuguese preposition em (in, at, on). (For the preposition de, check out this post.)

Em casa, no escritório: At Home, At the Office

The preposition em means in(to), at, or on. Em forms contractions with the definite articles a(s) and o(s):

• em + a = na
• em + as = nas
• em + o = no
• em + os = nos

Here are some examples of how to use em and its contractions.

• Eu estou em casa.
  I’m at home.
• Você está no escritório?
  Are you at the office?
• O meu passaporte está no bolso.
  My passport is in the pocket.
• As minhas canetas estão na mesa.
  My pens are on the table.
• Vou colocar os documentos nas pastas.
  I’m going to put the documents into the folders.
• O Brasil é dividido em 26 estados.
  Brazil is divided into 26 states.
• O hotel fica na rua Augusta.
  The hotel is on Rua Augusta.
• Ele sempre fica nos melhores hotéis. 
  He always stays at the best hotels.

Neste, Nesse Naquele: Contractions with Demonstratives

The preposition em forms contractions with the demonstratives  as well:

• em + este/esta = neste/nesta
• em + estes/estas = nestes/nestas
• em + esse/essa = nesse/nessa
• em + esses/essas = nesses/nessas
• em + aquele/aquela = naquele/naquela
• em + aqueles/aquelas = naqueles/naquelas

Let’s see some examples.

• Ligue para mim neste número.
  Call me at this number.
• For favor, sente-se nesse sofá para esperar.
  Please sit on this sofa to wait.
• Quem mora naquela casa?
  Who lives in that house?
• Eu coloquei açúcar nestas xicaras, mas não nestes copos. 
  I put sugar in these cups but not in these glasses.
• Minhas roupas estão nestas malas.
  My clothes are in those suitcases.
• Faz muito frio naquelas montanhas.
  It’s very cold in those mountains.

Neste quarto: In This Room

Here are some more sentences with the preposition em. Notice the range of meanings, from literal location to more extended meanings. Also take note of the contractions em forms.

• Neste quarto há um beliche. Você prefere dormir em cima ou em baixo?
  There’s a bunkbed in this room. Do you prefer to sleep on the top or bottom bed?
• Já procurei minha carteira em todos os lugares nesta casa.
  I’ve already looked for my wallet in every corner of this house.
• Ele não vem. Neste caso, vamos embora.
  He’s not coming. In this case, let’s go.
• Preciso pendurar alguns quadros naquelas paredes.
  I need to hang some pictures on those walls.
• Você prefere uma mesa nesta sala ou naquela no pátio?
  Do you prefer a table in this room or in that one on the patio?
• Não vamos à praia nos meses em que chove.
  We don’t go to the beach in the months it rains.
• Quero viajar no meu aniversario.
  I want to travel on my birthday.

Practice

A. First complete the following sentences with em, no, nos, na, nas.

1. As chaves estão _____ uma gaveta, mas não sei _____ qual.
   The keys are in a drawer, but I don’t know in which.
2. Eu coloquei as chaves _____ gaveta da sala.
   I put the keys is the drawer in the living room.
3. Os ingredientes estão _____ no balcão da cozinha.
   The ingredients are on the kitchen counter.
4. 4. Nós vamos visitá-lo _____ datas marcadas pela enfremeira.
   We’re going to visit him on the dates scheduled by the nurse.

B. Now complete with nestes, naquela, naqueles, nesta.

1. Quem estacionou o carro _____ vaga?
   Who parked in this spot?
2. O que você colocou _____ pratos?
   What did you put on these plates?
3. Vou estar ocupada _____ data.
   I’ll be busy on that date.
4. Quem mora _____ apartamentos tão luxuosos?
   Who lives in those luxury apartments?

Answers: A. 1. em/em; 2.na; 3. no; 4.nas; B. 1. naquela; 2. nestes; 3. naquela; 4. naqueles
