In this post we’ll learn several common German action verbs. First, we’ll start with verbs of movement like come and go. After that we’ll turn to verbs that you can use to talk about your daily routine. Next, we’ll move on to verbs for basic actions around the house. Then we’ll look at verbs for shopping, working, and physical activities. Finally, we’ll learn some verbs for feeling and thinking, followed by verbs of ability, necessity, and desire.

Wohin gehst du? Where are you going?

Let’s start with a bunch of verbs to talking about coming and going: (zu Fuß) gehen (to go on foot) (mit dem Auto, Zug usw.) fahren to go (by car, train, etc.); gehen to walk; kommen to come, weggehen / verlassen to leave; ankommen to arrive; ausgehen to go out; eintreten / in… gehen to enter.

• Ich fahre mit dem Auto zur Arbeit. Ich gehe zu Fuß zur Arbeit.
  I go to work by car. I go to work on foot.
• Wir gehen jeden Sonntag im Park spazieren.
  We walk in the park every Sunday.
• Wer kommt zu der Party am Wochenende?
  Who’s coming to the party this weekend?

• Ich gehe normalerweise spät aus dem Büro / von der Arbeit nach Hause.
  I usually leave work late.
• Der Zug kommt um 10:00 Uhr an.
  The train arrives at 10am.
• Ich gehe mit meinen Freunden aus.
  I go out with my friends.
• Ich gehe niemals nachts in den Park.
  I never go in the park at night.

Now let’s see some verbs that you can use to talk about your daily routine: aufwachen to wake up; duschen to take a shower; baden, ein Bad nehmen to take a bath; sich anziehen to get dressed; ein Hemd anziehen to put on a shirt; sich ausziehen to get undressed; die Hose ausziehen to take off pants; sich (DATIV) die Zähne putzen to brush your teeth; sich (DATIV) die Hände waschen to wash your hands; frühstücken / zu Mittag/Abend essen to have breakfast/lunch/dinner; schlafen/zu Bett gehen to go to bed; schlafen to sleep.

• Die Woche über wache ich früh auf, und am Wochenende schlafe ich aus / wache ich spät auf.
  I wake up early during the week, and l wake up late on the weekend.
• Ich dusche morgens immer. Ich bade nie.
  I always take a shower in the morning. I never take a bath.
• Ich ziehe mich schnell an.
  I get dressed quickly.
• Wenn es kalt ist, zieht sie einen Pullover an.
  She puts on a sweater when it’s cold.
• Ich ziehe mich aus, bevor ich schlafen gehe.
  I get undressed before bed.
• Im Haus zieht er die Schuhe aus.
  He takes off his shoes in the house.

Here are several general verbs that you can use in daily life. sprechento speak; redento talk; sagento say; verstehento understand; lernento learn; lernen / studieren to study (studieren= only at university); fragen to ask; beantworten / antworten to answer (beantworten (+direct object), antworten (dative object, or with preposition auf + accusative)).

• Wie viele Sprachen sprichst du?
  How many languages do you speak?
• Ich reden jeden Tag mit meinen Freunden.
  I talk with my friends every day.
• Was sagt sie? Ich verstehe sie nicht.
  What is she saying? I don’t understand.
• Kinder lernen viel in der Schule.
  Children learn a lot in school.
• Was studierst du an der Uni?
  What do you study at university?
• Kinder stellen viele Fragen.
  Children ask a lot of questions.
• Der Lehrer/Die Lehrerin beantwortet Fragen.
  The teacher answers questions.

Greman Action Verbs for Around the House

Now let’s look at a few German action verbs that you can use to talk about what you do around the house: gebento give; machento make; nehmento take; öffnento open; schließento close; benutzento use; aufhebento pick up; setzen / stellen / legento put (to sit / to place / to lay).

• Ich gebe meiner Freundin ein Geburtstagsgeschenk.
  I give my friend a present on her birthday.
• Die Kinder machen / basteln Geschenke für ihre Eltern.
  The children make gifts for their parents. (basteln is used with crafts)
• Fährst du morgens mit dem Zug oder mit dem Bus?
  Do you take the train or the bus in the morning?
• Sie öffnet die Tür.
  She opens the door.
• Er schließt die Tür.
  He closes the door.
• Schreibst du mit Kuli oder mit Bleistift?
  Do you use a pen or a pencil?
• Ich hebe meine Taschen auf.
  I pick up my bags.
• Ich lege Schlüssel normalerweise in eine Schublade.
  I usually put my keys in a drawer.

Now let’s look at some verbs that you can use to talk about typical situations at home: essento eat; trinkento drink; kochento cook; sauber machen / reinigen / putzento clean; (das Geschirr) spülento do the dishes; Wäsche waschento do the laundry; das Geschirr wegräumento put away the dishes;

• Ich esse viel Reis.
  I eat a lot of rice.
• Trinkst du morgens Tee oder Kaffee?
  Do you drink tea or coffee in the morning?
• Du kochst echt gut!
  You cook very well!
• Samstags putze ich meine Wohnung.
  I clean my apartment on Saturdays.
• Wir waschen jeden Abend das Geschirr.
  We do dishes every evening.

  He does laundry on Sundays.

German Action Verbs for Relaxing at Home

Let’s continue with some more basic verbs for the home: fernsehento watch TV; Musik hörento listen to music; lesento read; (sich) entspannento relax; sich hinlegento lie down; sich setzento sit down; aufstehento stand up.

• Siehst du jeden Abend fern?
  Do you watch TV every evening?
• Ich höre jeden Tag Musik.
  I listen to music every day.
• Ich lese abends immer im Bett.
  I read every night in bed.
• Wir entspannen (uns) jedes Wochenende.
  We relax every weekend.
• Am Nachmittag lege ich mich hin.
  I lie down in the afternoon.

Here are some common verbs related to shopping: kaufen to buy; einkaufen to go shopping; suchen (nach) to look for; finden to find; (be)zahlen to pay; kosten to cost; anprobieren to try on; Geld ausgeben to spend money; am Bankautomat Geld abheben to withdraw money from an ATM; Geld sparen to save money.

• Wir kaufen Lebensmittel im Supermarkt ein.
  We buy food at the supermarket.
• Wir gehen jedes Wochenende einkaufen.
  We go shopping every weekend.
• Ich suche ein neues Paar Schuhe.
  I’m looking for a new pair of shoes.
• In diesem Laden findet er immer etwas Interessantes.
  He always finds something interesting in this store.

Now let’s look at some common verbs you can use at work: arbeiten to work; anfangen / beginnen to start; zu Ende sein / enden / beenden to end; schreiben to write; anrufen to call (on phone); eine E-Mail schicken to send an email; eine E-Mail bekommen to get an email; (eine) Pause machen to take a break; ein Meeting haben to have a meeting; diskutieren / besprechen to discuss.

• Ich arbeite montags, dienstags, mittwochs, donnerstags, und freitags. Samstags und sonntags arbeite ich nicht.
  I work on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. I don’t work on Saturdays and Sundays.
• Das Meeting fängt immer montags um 10 Uhr an.
  The meeting starts every Monday at 10am.
• Um wieviel Uhr ist das Meeting zu Ende?
  What time does the meeting end?
• Er schreibt viele Berichte.
  He writes a lot of reports.

• Mit meinen Freunden habe ich immer Spaß.
  I always have a good time with my friends.
• Wir gehen jedes Wochenende in Clubs und tanzen.
  We go to nightclubs and dance every weekend.
• Sie singt echt gut!
  She sings really well!
• Er lächelt immer. Er ist nie traurig.
  He always smiles. He’s never sad.
• Sie lachen, wenn sie zusammen sind.
  They laugh when they’re together.
• Ich treibe vier bis fünf Tage pro Woche Sport.
  I work out four or five days a week.

• Die Kinder rennen auf dem Spielplatz.
  The children run in the playground.
• Wir spielen Baseball / Basketball / Fußball.
  We play baseball/basketball/soccer.
• Ich spiele Klavier / Trompete / Geige.
