Я нехорошо себя чувствую! I’m not feeling well! Russian Vocabulary for Illness and Feeling Sick

In this post we’ll learn a lot of Russian vocabulary for illness. First, we’ll start with some general Russian vocabulary for feeling sick. Then we’ll move on to vocabulary and expressions for talking about coughs, congestion, and headaches. After that we’ll move on to other Russian vocabulary for illness related to fevers and being sick to your stomach. Next we’ll cover some essential vocabulary for visiting the doctor. Finally, we’ll wrap up with expressions you can use when someone else is ill.

Я болен / больна. I’m sick.

Let’s start with some general Russian vocabulary for feeling sick.

• Я плохо себя чувствую.
  I don’t feel well.
• Мне кажется, я заболеваю.
  I think I’m getting sick.
• Я болен (m.) / Я больна (f.)
  I’m sick.
• У меня простуда. 
  I have a cold.

• У меня грипп.
  I have the flu.
• У меня кашель.
  I have a cough.
• У меня заложен/забит нос.
  I have congestion/a stuffed nose.
• У меня болит голова.
  I have a headache.
• У меня температура.
  I have a fever.
• Меня тошнит. 
  I feel nauseated.
• У меня нет энергии.
  I have no energy.
• Я не могу сегодня идти на работу.
  I can’t go to work today.
• Я не могу сегодня идти в школу.
  I can’t go to school today.

У меня очень сильный кашель. I have a bad cough.

Кашель (m.) (a cough) is a pretty common symptom of all sorts of sicknesses. 

• У меня болит горло. 
  I have a sore throat. 
• Я много кашляю.
  I’m coughing a lot.
• Я плохо спал/спала, потому что кашлял/кашляла всю ночь. 
  I didn’t sleep well, because I coughed all night.
• Мои лёгкие заложены.
  My lungs are very congested.
• Мне нужно принять сироп от кашля. 
  I need to take cough syrup.
• У вас/тебя есть леденцы от кашля?
  Do you have cough drops?
• Я теряю голос, потому что кашляю так много.
  I’m losing my voice because I’m coughing so much.

У меня забит нос. I have a stuffy nose.

The other really common symptom of being sick is a stuffy or runny nose. 

• У меня заложен/забит нос. 
  My nose is congested/stuffed.
• У меня течёт из носа.
  My nose is running.
• Мне нужна салфетка. 
  I need a tissue.
• Мне нужно высморкаться. 
  I need to blow my nose.
• Мне нужно купить капли в нос. 
  I need to buy a decongestant. 
• У меня совсем не дышит нос. 
  I can’t breathe through my nose.
• Я много чихаю.
  I sneeze a lot.
• Мой нос сводит меня с ума. 
  My nose is driving me crazy.

У меня болит голова. I have a headache. 

Головная боль (f.) (a headache) or ломота в теле (body aches) are also pretty common when you’re sick.

• У меня ужасно болит голова.
  I have a terrible headache.
• У меня раскалывается голова.
  My head is pounding. (“My head is being split in pieces.”)
• У вас/тебя есть аспирин?
  Do you have aspirin?
• У меня закончился аспирин.
  I ran out of aspirin.
• Мне нужно (при)лечь.
  I need to lie down.
• У меня мигрень. 
  I have a migraine. 
• У меня ломота в теле. 
  I have body aches. 

У меня жар. I have a fever. 

If you’re sick it’s important to know if you have температура/жар (a fever).

• Я думаю у меня температура/жар. 
  I think I have a fever.
• По-моему у тебя/вас слишком горячий лоб.
  You feel very warm to me.
• Тебе/вам нужно измерить температуру.
  You need to take your temperature.
• У вас/тебя есть градусник?
  Do you have a thermometer?
• У вас/тебя небольшая температура. 
  You have a low fever.
• У вас/тебя высокая температура. 
  You have a high fever.
• Вам/тебе нужно сбить температуру.
  You need to lower your temperature.
• Жар спал./ Температура понизилась.
  My fever broke.

Меня сейчас вырвет. I’m going to throw up.

There are lots of other unpleasant symptoms that you may need to describe.

• У меня кружится голова. 
  I’m dizzy.
• Я сейчас упаду в обморок. 
  I’m going to faint.
• Меня тошнит. 
  I’m nauseated.
• Меня сейчас вырвет.
  I’m going to vomit/throw up.
• У меня диарея/понос.
  I have diarrhea. 
• У меня озноб. 
  I have chills.
• Я потею.
  I’m sweating.
• Я потерял/потеряла обоняние.
  I’ve lost my sense of smell.
• Я потерял/потеряла чувство вкуса. 
  I’ve lost my sense of taste.

В кабинете врача: At the doctor’s office

If you’re sick and it’s not going away, you need to go to the doctor. 

• Вы/ты ходили/ходил к врачу?
  Have you gone to see the doctor?
• Мне надо записаться на приём к врачу.
  I need to make a doctor’s appointment.
• Медсестра/медбрат измеряет моё кровяное давление. 
  The nurse takes my blood pressure.
• Доктор осматривает моё горло и уши. 
  The doctor looks in my throat and ears.
• Какие у вас/тебя симптомы?
  What are your symptoms?
• У вас/тебя инфекция.
  You have an infection.
• У вас/тебя грипп. 
  You have the flu.
• У вас/тебя бронхит.
  You have bronchitis.
• У вас/тебя пневмония/воспаление лёгких. 
  You have pneumonia. 
• Вам/тебе нужны антибиотики.
  You need antibiotics.
• Вот назначение/рецепт.
  Here is a prescription. 
• Вам/тебе нужно изолироваться. 
  You need to isolate yourself.
• Не заразите других. 
  Don’t get anyone else sick.
• Вам/тебе надо отдыхать.
  You need to rest.
• Вам/тебе надо пить много жидкости.
  You need to drink a lot of fluids.
• Я сейчас возьму у вас/тебя кровь на анализ.
  I’m going to do blood tests on you.
• Вам/тебе нужен рентген. 
  You need an X-ray.

If you’re not sick but know someone who is, you may want to know how to say:

• Вы чувствуете себя лучше сегодня?/ Ты чувствуешь себя лучше сегодня?
  Are you feeling any better today?
• Как давно вы болеете?/ Как давно ты болеешь?/ Как давно ты болен/больна?
  How long have you been sick?
• Вам/тебе нужно пойти к врачу.
  You need to go to the doctor.
• Не зарази меня!
  Don’t get me sick!
• Могу я что-нибудь тебе/вам принести?
  Can I bring you anything?
• Я надеюсь, ты лучше себя чувствуешь/ вы лучше себя чувствуете!
  I hope you feel better!
• Поправляйся/ поправляйтесь скорее!
  Get well soon!
