In this post you’ll learn vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about summer in Japanese: 夏 natsu summer, 海 umi the sea/beach, and のんびりとした屋外活動 nonbiritoshita okugai katsudou  relaxing outdoor activities.

いいお天気です。Ii otenki desu. The weather is beautiful.

First, let’s talk about the weather. For many people, the weather is the greatest thing about summer. So, let’s give you some expressions you can use.

• 今日はいいお天気です。
  Kyou wa ii otenki desu.
  The weather is beautiful today.
• 太陽が輝いています。
  Taiyou ga kagayaite imasu.
  The sun is shining.
• 空に雲ひとつありません。
  Sora ni kumo hitotsu arimasen.
  There are no clouds in the sky.

• 風が気持ちいいです。
  Kaze ga kimochi ii desu.
  There’s a nice breeze.
• 空気がおいしいです。
  Kuuki ga oishii desu.
  The air is fresh.
• いいお天気です。
  Ii otenki desu.
  It’s a perfect day.

暑すぎます！Atsusugimasu! It’s too hot!

But of course, not everyone loves summer weather. If you’re one of those people, you may want to say something like:

• 今日は暑すぎます！
  Kyou wa atsusugimasu!
  It’s too hot today.
• ジメジメしています。
  Jimejime shiteimasu.
  It’s very humid.
• 汗をかいています。
  Ase o kaiteimasu.
  I’m sweating.
• エアコンをつけてください！
  Eakon o tsukete kudasai!
  Put the air-conditioner on!

外に出ましょう！Soto ni demashou. Let’s go outside!

Now let’s turn to the outdoors. No post about summer in Japanese would be complete without vocabulary for enjoying the outdoors. Whether you like のんびりとした屋外活動 nonbiritoshita okugai katsudou  relaxing outdoor activities or スポーツ supootsu  sports, there’s usually something for everyone in the summer.

• 散歩をしましょう。
  Sanpo o shimashou.
  Let’s go for a walk.
• 公園に行きたいです。
  Kouen ni ikitai desu.
  I want to go to the park.
• 座って日の入りを見ましょう。
  Suwatte hinoiri o mimashou.
  Let’s sit and watch the sunset.
• 週末にピクニックに行きます。
  Shuumatsu ni pikunikku ni ikimasu.
  We’re having a picnic this weekend.
• 自転車に乗りましょう。
  Jitensha ni norimashou.
  Let’s go for a bike ride.
• 山にハイキングに行きましょう。
  Yama ni haikingu ni ikimashou.
  Let’s go for a hike in the mountains.
• テニスをしましょう。
  Tenisu o shimashou.
  Let’s play tennis.
• バスケットボールをしましょう。
  Basukettobooru o shimashou.
  Let’s play basketball.
• サッカーをしましょう。
  Sakkaa o shimashou.
  Let’s play soccer.
• 野球をしましょう。
  Yakyuu o shimashou.
  Let’s play baseball.
• 走りに行きたいです。
  Hashiri ni ikitai desu.
  I want to go for a run.
• ロッククライミングをしに行きます。
  Rokku kuraimingu o shini ikimasu.
  We’re going rock climbing.

海に行きましょう。Umi ni ikimashou. Let’s go to the beach.

Next we’ll go to the beach. Talking about the beach is a big part of talking about summer in Japanese. If you’re going, you’ll probably want to know these words: 水着 mizugi  a swimsuit, タオル taoru a towel, サングラス sangurasu sunglasses, 日焼け止め hiyakedome sunscreen, 良本 ryouhon a good book, サーフボード saafuboodo a surfboard. Here are some things you may see at the beach: 海 umi the ocean, 波 nami a wave, 砂 suna sand, 貝殻 kaigara seashells, 灯台 toudai a light house, カモメ kamome a seagull, 蟹 kani a crab, クラゲ kurage a jellyfish, 魚 sakana a fish, ヒトデ hitode a starfish, サメ same a shark, イルカ iruka a dolphin, 船 fune a boat, ボードウォークboodowooku the board walk, アイス屋さん aisuyasan an ice cream shop.

Some other expressions that will come in handy are:

• 日光浴がしたいです。
  Nikkouyoku ga shitaidesu.
  I want to lie in the sun.
• 泳ぎに行きましょう。
  Oyogi ni ikimashou.
  Let’s go swimming.
• 日焼けをします。
  Hiyake o shimasu.
  I’m getting a suntan.
• 日焼けでヒリヒリします。
  Hiyake de hirihiri shimasu.
  I got a sun burn.
• 砂の城を作りましょう。
  Suna no shiro o tsukurimashou.
  Let’s build a sandcastle.
• 波遊びをしましょう。
  Namiasobi o shimashou.
  Let’s play in the waves.
• 貝殻を探しましょう。
  Kaigara o sagashimashou.
  Let’s look for seashells.
• アイスクリームが欲しいです。
  Aisukuriimu ga hoshii desu.
  I want ice cream.

静かな夏の夜 shizukana natsu no yoru: A Quiet Summer Night

Finally, let’s talk about quiet summer nights. 夏は日が沈むのが遅いです。Natsu wa hi ga shizumuno ga osoi desu.The sun sets late in the summer, but there’s nothing like a nice summer night, whether you’re having drinks outside with your friends, or you’re just sitting and listening to nature.

• 外で座りましょう。
  Soto de suwarimashou.
  Let’s sit outside.
• 夜は涼しいです。
  Yoru wa suzushii desu.
  The night is cool.
• コオロギの鳴き声が聞こえます。
  Koorogi no nakigoe ga kikoemasu.
  I hear crickets.
• ホタルが見えます。
  Hotaru ga miemasu.
  I see lightning bugs/fireflies.
• 風が木々の間を通りぬけていきます。
  Kaze ga kigi no aida o toorinukete ikimasu.
  The breeze is blowing through the trees.
• 月が出ました。
  Tsuki ga demashita.
  The moon is rising.
• 明日もいい天気です。
  Ashita mo ii tenki desu.
  Tomorrow will be another beautiful day.
