In this post we’ll learn vocabulary and expressions that you can use to talk about the holiday season in Japanese. First we’ll learn holiday greetings that you can use for Christmas and Hanukkah. Greetings for the Holiday Season in Japanese
The first thing you may want to know how to say is of course Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah. Here are some other expressions you can use to wish people well during the holiday season. We’ll come back to how to say happy new year in Japanese later.

Decorations during the Holiday Season in Japanese
Lots of people put up decorations this time of year, so you may want to say: クリスマスツリー kurisumasu tsurii (Christmas tree), メノーラー menooraa (menorah), 星 hoshi (star), ろうそく rousoku (candle), ベル beru (bell), カラフルなライト karafuru na raito (colorful lights), キリスト降誕場面 kirisuto koutan bamen (nativity scene), 赤ん坊のイエス akanbou no iesu (baby Jesus), 天使 tenshi (angel), 東方の三賢者 touhou no sankenja (three kings), サンタクロース santakuroosu (Santa Claus), 雪だるま yukidaruma (snowman), トナカイ tonakai (reindeer).
- 今週末にクリスマスツリーを買いに行きます。
Konshuumatsu ni kurisumasu tsurii o kai ni ikimasu.
We’re going to buy a Christmas tree this weekend. - クリスマスツリーの飾りつけをしましょう。
Kurisumasu tsurii no kazaritsuke o shimashou.
Let’s decorate the Christmas tree. - メノーラーを灯しましょう。
Menooraa o tomoshimashou.
Let’s light the menorah. - メノーラーは9つのろうそくでできています。
Menooraa wa kokonotsu no rousoku de dekite imasu.
A menorah has nine candles. - 家にカラフルなライトが灯っています。
Ie ni karafuru na raito ga tomotte imasu.
There are colorful lights on the house. - クリスマスツリーのオーナメントがきれいです。

Holiday Gifts
Exchanging presents is of course a big part of the holiday season, so you may want to say: プレゼント purezento (gift/present), ラッピングペーパー rappingu peepaa (wrapping paper), カード kaado (card).
- たくさんの友人や親戚にプレゼントを買わなければなりません。
Takusan no yuujin ya shinseki ni purezento o kawanakereba narimasen.
I have to buy gifts for a lot of friends and relatives. - プレゼントがあります。
Purezento ga arimasu.
I got a present for you. - 何を買ってくれたんですか。
Nani o katte kuretan desu ka.
What did you get for me? - プレゼントを開けてください。
Purezento o akete kudasai.
Unwrap your present. - これは素敵なプレゼントです!
Kore wa suteki na purezento desu!
This is a great present! - 気遣ってくれてありがとうございます。
Kizukatte kurete arigatou gozaimasu.
You’re so generous/thoughtful. - プレゼントがとても気に入りました。
Purezento ga totemo kini irimashita.
I love my present. - このプレゼントを手作りしました。
Kono purezento o tezukuri shimashita.
I made this gift for you myself. - サンタクロースがクリスマスツリーの下にプレゼントを置いていきました。
Santakuroosu ga kurisumasu tsurii no shita ni purezento o oite ikimashita.
Santa Claus left gifts under the Christmas tree. - ハヌカにプレゼントを八つもらいます。
Hanuka ni purezento o yattsu moraimasu.

The Spirit of the Holiday Season in Japanese
The holiday season means different things to different people.
- 年末年始が大好きです。
Nenmatsu nenshi ga daisuki desu.
I love the holiday season. - 街中でクリスマスの音楽がかかっています。
Machijuu de kurisumasu no ongaku ga kakatte imasu.
There is Christmas music everywhere. - 年末年始が楽しみです。
Nenmatsu nenshi ga tanoshimi desu.
I’m looking forward to the holiday. - クリスマスが大好きです。
Kurisumasu ga daisuki desu.
I love Christmas. - ハヌカに家族と会えるのが楽しみです。
Hanuka ni kazoku to aeru no ga tanoshimi desu.
I’m excited to see my family for Hanukkah. - 世界の平和を願っています。
Sekai no heiwa o negatte imasu.
I hope for peace on earth. - 貧しい家族のために寄付をします。
Mazushii kazoku no tame ni kifu o shimasu.
We’re donating gifts for poor families. - 困っている人達に食べ物をあげることは大切です。
Komatte iru hitotachi ni tabemono o ageru koto wa taisetsu desu.
It’s important to give food to people who need it. - 家族や友人に感謝しています。
Kazoku ya yuujin ni kansha shite imasu.

Happy New Year in Japanese
Soon enough, the year will come to an end, and people everywhere will drink a toast to the new year. So you’ll want to know how to wish people a happy new year in Japanese, and how to talk about all of the festivities.
- 大晦日のパーティーに行きますか。
Oomisoka no paatii ni ikimasu ka.
Are you going to a New Year’s Eve party? - 家族と友人とで盛大なディナーパーティーをします。
