In this post we’ll cover some Portuguese vocabulary and constructions that you can use to express your opinion, ask about other people’s opinions, agree, or disagree with someone.

O que você acha deste filme? What do you think of this film?

Let’s start with some questions that you can ask to find out other people’s opinions.

• Você gosta deste filme/ deste livro?
  Do you like this film/ this book?
• O que você acha desta canção/ desta pintura?
  What do you think of this song/ this painting?
• Qual é a sua opinião sobre este assunto?
  What’s your opinion on this topic?
• Você concorda comigo?
  Do you agree with me?
• O que você acha do artigo?
  What did you think of the article?

• Você gostou da festa / da aula?
  How did you like the party/ the class?
• Você recomenda este restaurante / este livro?
  Do you recommend this restaurant/ this book?
• Por que você pensa assim?
  Why do you feel that way?
• Você pode explicar a sua opinião?
  Can you explain your opinion?
• O que faz você gostar disto? Por que você gosta disto? 
  What do you like about it? Why do you like it?
• O que faz você não gostar disto? Por que você não gosta disto?
  What don’t you like about it? Why don’t you like it?

Eu gostei muito do filme. I liked the film very much.

Now let’s look at some expressions that you can use to express that you like something. Some vocabulary that might come in handy is: realmente bom / boa – really good, ótimo(a)– great, interessante – interesting, fascinante – fascinating, muito agradável – very enjoyable, original – original, lógico(a) – logical.

• O filme foi muito bom / foi ótimo.
  The film was really good/ great.
• O restaurante estava maravilhoso / fantástico.
  The restaurant was wonderful/ fantastic.
• Eu me diverti muito na festa.
  I had a great time at the party.
• Achei o livro fascinante.
  I thought the book was fascinating.
• Achei o artigo realmente interessante.
  I found the article really interesting.
• Acho que essa canção é muito boa.
  I think that this song is really good.

Realmente não gostei do filme nem um pouco. I really didn’t like the film at all.

Now let’s look at some expressions that you can use to express that you don’t like something. Some vocabulary that might come in handy is: realmente ruim – really bad, terrível – terrible, tedioso(a) / um tédio – boring, horrível – awful, sem originalidade – unoriginal, ilógico(a) – illogical.

• O filme foi realmente ruim / horrível.
  The film was really bad/ awful.
• O restaurante estava terrível.
  The restaurant was terrible.
• A festa estava tediosa.
  The party was boring.
• Achei que o livro era sem originalidade.
  I thought the book was unoriginal.
• Achei que o artigo era ilógico.
  I found the article really illogical.
• Acho que esta canção é terrível.
  I think that this song is terrible.
• Eu não suporto ele/ ela / esta canção / este lugar.
  I can’t stand him/ her/ this song/ this place.

Eu concordo com você. I agree with you.

Here are some expressions that you can use to show that you agree or disagree with someone.

• Nós concordamos. Concordo com você/ com isso.
  We agree. I agree with you/ that.
• Nós discordamos. Não concordo com você / com isso.
  We disagree. I don’t agree with you/ that.
• Você está certo(a). Você está absolutamente certo(a).
  You’re right. You’re absolutely right.
• Você está errado(a). Você está totalmente errado(a).
  You’re wrong. You’re totally wrong.
• Sinto a mesma coisa sobre este livro /  filme.
  I feel the same way about this book/ film.
• Não sinto a mesma coisa sobre esta canção / este escritor / esta escritora.
  I feel differently about this song/ writer.
• A minha opinião é a mesma.
  I have the same opinion about it.
• A minha opinião é diferente.
  I have a different opinion about it.

Isso faz muito sentido. That makes a lot of sense.

Here are some expressions and vocabulary that you can use if you think someone is making a good point.

• Esse é um argumento muito bom.
  That’s a really good point.
• Isso faz muito sentido.
  That makes a lot of sense.
• Isso tem muita lógica.
  That’s completely logical.
• Isso comprova o seu argumento / a sua opinião.
  That proves your point/ opinion.
• Ela deu exemplos muito bons.
  She gave really good examples.
• Ele pesquisou muito para comprovar as próprias alegações.
  He did a lot of research to support his claim.
• O artigo / A entrevista mudou a minha ideia.
  The article/ The interview changed my mind.
• Esse argumento é muito convincente / forte.
  That’s very a convincing/ strong argument.

Isso não faz nenhum sentido! That makes no sense!

• Esse é realmente um exemplo muito ruim.
  That’s a really bad example.
• Isso não faz nenhum sentido.
  That makes no sense.
• Isso é totalmente ilógico.
  That’s totally illogical.
• Você não está provando o seu argumento.
  You’re not proving your point.
• Você não tem nenhum exemplo do que está dizendo.
  You have no examples of what you’re saying.
• Não há evidência para comprovar a sua alegação. 
  There’s no evidence that supports your claim.
• Isso é ridículo / absurdo / estupido / uma idiotice. 
  That’s ridiculous/ absurd/ stupid/ idiotic.
