Halloween is around the corner, so to help get you in the mood for привидения (ghosts) and ведьмы (witches), let’s look at some Russian vocabulary for Halloween.
Things that go bump in the night.
Вы наденете / ты наденешь костюм в этом году на Хэллоуин? (are you wearing a Halloween costume this year)? Kids aren’t the only ones who wear костюмы (costumes). Some of the classics are мумия (a mummy), оборотень (a werewolf), зомби (a zombie), монстр (a monster), дьявол (a devil), or вампир (a vampire). But страшный костюм (a scary costume) is not your only option. You could also be чучело (a scarecrow), колдун (a sorcerer), фея (a fairy), принцесса (a princess), пират (a pirate), or персонаж из фильма(character from a movie.)
- Какой костюм вы наденете на этот Хэллоуин?/Какой костюм ты наденешь на этот Хэллоуин?
What are you dressing as this Halloween? - У вас / у тебя отличный / классный костюм!
Your costume looks great! - Ваш / твой костюм сделан с фантазией!
Your costume is very creative! - У тебя / у вас страшный костюм!
Your costume is scary!
Для детей (For Kids)
Kids love to go trick-or-treating. They walk around their neighborhood and они стучат в двери (they knock on doors). When someone answers, they hold up their сумки / мешки(bags) and ask for конфеты(candy). If the person doesn’t give the kids candy, beware of the trick! Since no one needs to give kids any more ideas about шалости / озорство(mischief), we’ll leave that to your imagination. Бережёного Бог бережёт! (Better safe than sorry! Lit: God protects the one who protects himself.) Best to just make sure you have enough candy.
- Мальчик / девочка держит сумку, полную конфет.
The boy/girl is holding a bag full of candy. - Какая твоя любимая конфета?
What’s your favorite candy? - Я люблю шоколад.
I love chocolate. - Я тебя разыграл.
I played a trick on you.
Для взрослых (For Adults)
Halloween isn’t just for kids. Adults also like to get dressed up. Do you wear your костюм(costume) to work? Or maybe you go to вечеринка (a party) where everyone is dressed up. Even if you don’t go to any parties, you probably get тыква (a pumpkin) for a jack-o-lantern. You’ll carve лицо (a face) into it, and put свеча / свечка(candle) inside so the face glows.
- Мы идём на костюмированную вечеринку.
We’re going to a costume party. - Давай купим тыкву в эти выходные.
Let’s buy a pumpkin this weekend.
Мне страшно! (I’m Scared!)
Halloween is a great time of year to watch фильмы ужасов (horror movies) or maybe visit дом с привидениями (a haunted house). It’s fun to кричать(scream), as long as кошмары(nightmares) aren’t too bad. Now that summer is over and ночь (the night) is longer, it’s the perfect time to visit жуткие места (eerie places), places for some good Halloween fun. Walk through леса (the woods) во тьме / в темноте (in the dark), take a shortcut through кладбище (the graveyard), visit that заброшенный дом (abandoned house) where you know there are probably no злые духи / нечисть (evil spirits). Or at least you hope.
- Это жуткое место!
This place is spooky! - Давайте/давай посмотрим фильм ужасов.
Let’s watch a horror film. - Мне приснился кошмар прошлой ночью.
I had a nightmare last night. - У меня мурашки по коже!
I have goosebumps! - Я слышу странный шум!
I hear a strange noise! - Вы верите в привидения? / Ты веришь в привидения?
Do you believe in ghosts? - Давай прогуляемся по лесу в темноте.
Let’s walk through the woods in the dark.
