Vocabulary Note
In Korean, 헬스장 helseujang is the most common word for a gym or fitness center. 헬스 helseu, borrowed from English health, is often used to refer specifically to gym-based workouts and weight training. 헬스하다 helseuhada means to work out at the gym. 근력 운동 geullyeok undong means strength training, while 유산소 운동 yusanso undong means aerobic exercise / cardio.
등산 deungsan, literally mountain climbing, is commonly used for recreational mountain hiking, an especially popular activity in Korea. 하이킹 haiking is also understood, but 등산 is often more natural when describing hikes in the mountains.
For gym memberships, 회원권을 끊다 hoewongwoneul kkeunta is a common conversational expression meaning to sign up for or purchase a membership, despite 끊다 also meaning to cut or to stop in other contexts.

Korea has an extensive system of preventive medical examinations. 건강검진 geongang geomjin refers to a routine health screening or checkup. 정기 건강검진 jeonggi geongang geomjin means regular health checkup, and 종합 건강검진 jonghap geongang geomjin refers to a comprehensive medical screening.
Finally, Korean commonly uses 약을 먹다 yageul meokda, literally to eat medicine, when talking about taking oral medication. The honorific form is 약을 드시다 yageul deusida, while 약을 복용하다 yageul bogyonghada is a more formal medical expression meaning to take medication. The distinction is useful when speaking to medical professionals or discussing someone else’s health.
