Gosto! I Like It! Talking about Likes and Interests in Portuguese
In this post we’ll learn how to talk about likes and interests in Portuguese. First, we’ll learn some vocabulary and structures that you can use to express what you like. After that, we’ll move on to talking about preferences. Next, we’ll learn some vocabulary and grammar related to talking about what you like to do. Then we’ll learn how to express what you really like or love to do. Next, we’ll turn to expressions that you can use to express love, for people or things. Finally, we’ll wrap up with some vocabulary and expressions that you can use to talk about things you find interesting, fascinating, or exciting.
Gosto de chocolate. I like chocolate.
If you’re talking about things or people that you like, use the verb gostar (de).
- Gosto de chocolate / baunilha.
I like chocolate/vanilla. - Gosto de livros / de filmes.
I like books/movies.
- Você gosta de comida tailandesa?
Do you like Thai food? - Ele gosta de cogumelos / cebola / alho.
He likes mushrooms/onion/garlic. - Ela gosta desta canção.
She likes this song. - As crianças gostam do professor novo / da professora nova.
The kids like their new teacher. - Gosto deste cantor / desta cantora. Você gosta deste cantor / desta cantora?
I like this singer. Do you like this singer? - Gosto do seu irmão / da sua irmã / do seu amigo / da sua amiga.
I like your brother/sister/friend.
Gosto mais de cachorros do que de gatos. I like dogs more than cats.
If you want to say that you like A more than B, use the verb preferir to prefer, or gosto mais de X do que de Y to like X more than Y.
- (Eu) prefiro chocolate.
I prefer chocolate. - Gosto mais de chocolate do que de baunilha.
I like chocolate more than vanilla. - Gosto mais de cachorros do que de gatos.
I like dogs more than cats. - Prefiro cachorros.
I prefer dogs. - (Nós) gostamos mais de pizza do que de macarrão.
We like pizza more than pasta. - (Nós) preferimos comida tailandesa.
We prefer Thai food.
Gosto de cozinhar. I like to cook.
If you’re talking about things that you like to do, use the construction gostar de + infinitive.
- Gosto de ler / viajar / assistir TV.
I like to read/travel/watch TV. - Gosto de aprender línguas estrangeiras.
I like to learn foreign languages. - Gosto de andar de bicicleta / de nadar / de fazer caminhadas.
I like to ride my bike/swim/go hiking. - Ela gosta de malhar de manhã.
She likes to work out in the morning. - Ele gosta de dormir até tarde aos domingos.
He likes to sleep late on Sundays. - Gostamos de assistir a filmes juntos(as).
We like to watch movies together. - Eles gostam de discutir política.
They like to argue about politics. - O que você gosta de fazer?
What do you like to do? - Onde você gosta de ir nas férias?
Where do you like to go on vacation? - Que tipo de filmes você gosta de assistir?
What kind of movies do you like to watch? - Que tipo de comida você gosta de comer?
What kind of food do you like to eat?
Amo ficção científica. I love science fiction.
If you really like or love something, use the verb amar (to love) or gostar muito de (to like a lot).
- Amo / gosto muito de / cachorros / gatos / animais.
I love/really like dogs/cats/animals. - Amo / gosto muito de / tempo bom / neve.
I love/really like warm weather/snow. - Amo / gosto muito de / comida etíope.
I love/really like Ethiopian food. - Ele ama / realmente gosta de música clássica.
He loves/really likes classical music. - Ela ama / realmente gosta de vídeo games.
She loves/really likes video games.
Sou louco(a) por este novo restaurante. I’m mad about this new restaurant.
Some idiomatic expressions that you can use to talk about what you really like are ser louco(a) por (to be crazy about), ser maluco(a) por (to be nuts about), and curtir muito (to enjoy a lot).
- Sou louco(a) por esta loja / este restaurante.
I’m mad about this store/restaurant. - Ela é maluca pelo seu carro novo.
She’s nuts about her new car. - Ele curte muito caminhar / esquiar / correr.
He’s really into hiking/skiing/running. - (Eu) curto muito acampar.
I’m really into camping. - Ele é louco por motocicletas.
He’s crazy about motorcycles.
Amo minha mãe. I love my mother.
To talk about loving a person in a non-romantic way, use the verb amar (to love).
- Amo minha mãe / meu pai.
I love my mother/father. - Eles amam seus netos / suas netas.
They love their grandchildren. - Ele ama sua irmã.
He loves his sister. - Ela ama os seus amigos / as suas amigas.
She loves her friends.
Eu te amo. I love you.
You can also use amar to express romantic love.
- Eu te amo.
I love you. - Amo a minha mulher / esposa.
I love my wife. - Amo o meu marido.
I love my husband. - Eles / Elas se amam muito.
They love each other very much.
Idiomas são interessantes. Languages are interesting.
There are all sorts of other ways to express that you like something.
- Este livro é muito bom / legal.
This book is really good/cool. - Idiomas são interessantes.
Languages are interesting. - (Eu) acho livros / idiomas / filmes interessantes.
I find books/languages/films interesting. - Acho livros mais interessantes do que filmes.
I think that books are more interesting than films. - Esquiar é emocionante. Acho esquiar emocionante.
Skiing is exciting. I find skiing exciting. - Viajar é fascinante. Acho viajar fascinante.
Traveling is fascinating. I think traveling is fascinating. - Andar de bicicleta é divertido. Eu curto muito andar de bicicleta.
Biking is fun. I really enjoy biking. - Filmes são divertidos / interessantes.
Films are entertaining/interesting. - Esta escritora é fantástica. Os seus livros são incríveis.
This writer is amazing. Her books are incredible. - Este restaurante é ótimo. A comida aqui é saborosa / deliciosa.
This restaurant is great. The food here is exquisite/delicious.
