If you want to ask what kind of work someone does, you can say:
- お仕事は何ですか。
Oshigoto wa nan desu ka.
What do you do? - お仕事をしていますか。
Oshigoto o shite imasu ka.
Do you have a job? - どちらで働いていますか。
Dochira de hataraite imasu ka.
Where do you work?
私は看護師です。Watashi wa kangoshi desu. I’m a nurse.
When saying what you do for a living in Japanese, just use the copula です desu (am/are/is) for most jobs.
- 私は教師です。
Watashi wa kyoushi desu.
I’m a teacher. - 私は学生です。
Watashi wa gakusei desu.
I’m a student. - 私は看護師です。
Watashi wa kangoshi desu.
I’m a nurse. - 私は医者です。
Watashi wa isha desu.
I’m a doctor. - 私は歯科医です。
Watashi wa shikai desu.
I’m a dentist. - 私は警察官です。
Watashi wa keisatsukan desu.
I’m a police officer. - 私は消防士です。
Watashi wa shouboushi desu.
I’m a fireman. - 私は営業をしています。
Watashi wa eigyou o shite imasu.
I’m a salesperson. - 私は{ウェイター・ウェイトレス}です。
Watashi wa {weitaa/weitoresu} desu.
I’m a server. (waiter/waitress) - 私はバーテンダーです。
Watashi wa baatendaa desu.
I’m a bartender. - 私は調理師です。
Watashi wa chourishi desu.
I’m a cook. - 私は俳優です。
Watashi wa haiyuu desu.
I’m an actor. - 私はライターです。
Watashi wa raitaa desu.
I’m a writer. - 私はジャーナリストです。
Watashi wa jaanarisuto desu.
I’m a journalist. - 私はアーティストです。
Watashi wa aatisuto desu.
I’m an artist. - 私は歌手です。

I’m a social worker. - 私はヨガインストラクターです。

I’m a yoga instructor. - 私はレジ係です。
Watashi wa rejigakari desu.
I’m a cashier. - 私は郵便配達員です。
Watashi wa yuubin haitatsuin desu.
I’m a postal worker. - 私は公務員です。
Watashi wa koumuin desu.
I’m a civil servant.
仕事を探しています。 Shigoto o sagashite imasu. I’m looking for a job.
Here are a few other expressions you can use to describe where, or whether, you work.

Watashi wa kaishain desu.
I work in an office. - {大きな・小さい}会社で働いています。
{Ookina/Chiisai} kaisha de hataraite imasu.
I work for a big/small company. - 自宅勤務をしています。
Jitakukinmu o shiteimasu.
I work at home. - 自営業をしています。
Jieigyou o shiteimasu.
I have my own business. - 仕事があります。
Shigoto ga arimasu.
I have a job. - 無職です。
Mushoku desu.
I don’t have a job. - 仕事を探しています。
Shigoto o sagashite imasu.
I’m looking for a job. - 退職しました。
Taishoku shimashita.
I’m retired. - 失業中です。
Shitsugyouchuu desu.
I’m on unemployment.
