In this post we’ll take a look at vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about one of the most important rooms in the house. We’re not talking about the kitchen, but you can check that out here. We mean the bathroom. And the first thing you need to know about the bathroom in Japanese is that there are three different words for it:
- 洗面所
senmenjo
washroom, a room with a sink or wash basin - お手洗い
otearai
bathroom, toilet - 風呂場
furoba
washroom, bathing room, room with a shower and tub
お手洗いはどこですか。 Otearai wa doko desu ka. Where is the toilet?
If you’re visiting a city and doing a lot of sightseeing, chances are you’re going to need to use the toilet at some point. Which means you’ll need to know: 公衆便所 kōshūbenjo public toilet; 小便器 shōbenki urinal; 男性用手洗い dansēyō tearai men’s room; 女性用手洗い josēyō tearai ladies’ room.
- 近くに公衆便所はありますか。
Chikaku ni kōshūbenjo wa arimasu ka.
Is there a public toilet nearby? - お手洗いはどこですか。
Otearai wa doko desu ka.
Where’s the restroom? - 公園に自動洗浄機能付きのトイレがあります。
Kōen ni jidōsenjōkinōtsuki no toire ga arimasu.
There are automatic, self-cleaning public toilets in the park. - 公衆便所は無料ですか。それとも料金がかかりますか。
Kōshūbenjo wa muryō desu ka. Soretomo ryōkin ga kakarimasu ka.
Is the public toilet free or do I have to pay? - 係員にお金を払ってください。
Kakari’in ni okane o haratte kudasai.
Please pay the attendant. - お手洗いは使用中です。
Otearai wa shiyōchū desu.
The toilet is occupied. - お手洗いは使用できません。
Otearai wa shiyō dekimasen.
The toilet is closed. - お手洗いは清掃中です。
Otearai wa sēsōchū desu.
The toilet is being cleaned. - 出口の隣に｛トイレ・小便器｝があります。
Deguchi no tonari ni {toire/shōbenki} ga arimasu.
There are toilets/urinals next to the exit.
毎朝シャワーを浴びます。 Maiasa shawā o abimasu. I take a shower every morning.
Let’s start with some of the basics. In most bathrooms, you’ll find: シャワー shawā a shower, 洗面台 senmendai a sink, お風呂 ofuro a bathtub, トイレ toire a toilet, トイレットペーパー toiretto pēpā toilet paper, 鏡 kagami a mirror, ミラーキャビネット mirā kyabinetto a vanity/medicine cabinet, バスタオルbasutaoru a bath towel, ハンドタオルhandotaoru a hand towel, タオル掛けtaorukake towel rack.
- シャワーを浴びます。
Shawā o abimasu.
I’m about to take a shower. - シャワーを浴びています。
Shawā o abite imasu.
I’m taking a shower (now). - ｛体が汚れています・汗まみれです｝。シャワーを浴びなければいけません。
{Karada ga yogorete imasu/Asemamire desu}. Shawā o abinakereba ikemasen.
I’m dirty/sweaty. I need to take a shower. - お風呂に入ります。
Ofuro ni hairimasu.
I’m about to take a bath. - お風呂に入っています。
Ofuro ni haitte imasu.
I’m taking a bath (now). - 手を洗わなければいけません。
Te o arawanakereba ikemasen.
I need to wash my hands. - お手洗いはお風呂の横です。
Otearai wa ofuro no yoko desu.
The toilet is next to the bathtub. - 洗面台は小さいです。
Senmendai wa chīsai desu.
The bathroom sink is small. - 洗面台の上に鏡があります。
Senmendai no ue ni kagami ga arimasu.
There’s a mirror above the sink. - 頭痛薬はミラーキャビネットの中です。
Zutsūyaku wa mirā kyabinetto no naka desu.
The aspirin is in the medicine cabinet. - きれいなタオルがタオル掛けに掛かっています。
Kirēna taoru ga taorukake ni kakatte imasu.
A clean towel is hanging on the towel rack. - トイレの蓋を閉めてください。
Toire no futa o shimete kudasai.
Please close the toilet seat.
手を洗っています。 Te o aratte imasu. I’m washing my hands.
A lot of what we do in the bathroom is related to washing and getting clean: 石鹸 sekken soap, シャンプー shanpū shampoo, コンディショナー kondishonā conditioner, デオドラント deodoranto deodorant, 歯磨き粉 hamigakiko toothpaste, 歯ブラシ haburashi toothbrush, 剃刀 kamisori razor, シェービングフォーム shēbingu fōmu shaving cream, デンタルフロス dentaru furosu dental floss, 乳液 nyūeki facial cream, 保湿クリーム hoshitsu kurīmu moisturizing cream, （ヘア）ブラシ hea(burashi) (hair)brush, くし kushi comb, ドライヤー doraiyā blow dryer, 毛抜きtweezers, 爪切りtsumekiri nail clipper.
- 顔を洗わなければいけません。
Kao o arawanakereba ikemasen.
I need to wash my face. - 石鹸はどこですか。
Sekken wa doko desu ka.
Where’s the soap? - 毎晩歯磨きをしてデンタルフロスを使っています。
Maiban hamigaki o shite dentaru furosu o tsukatte imasu.
I brush and floss my teeth every night. - 歯磨き粉を買っておかなければいけません。
Hamigakiko o katte okanakereba ikemasen.
We need more toothpaste. - 私の歯ブラシは青で、[ ] の歯ブラシは白です。
Watashi no haburashi wa ao de, [name] no haburashi wa shiro desu.
My toothbrush is blue, and your toothbrush is white. - 鏡の前で髪をとかします。
Kagami no mae de kami o tokashimasu.
I brush/comb my hair in front of the mirror. - くしとブラシは洗面台の横の引き出しの中です。
Kushi to burashi wa senmendai no yoko no hikidashi no naka desu.
The combs and brushes are in the drawer next to the sink. - シャンプーを切らしてます。
Shanpū o kirashite imasu.
We’re out of shampoo. - コンディショナーを使いますか。
Kondishonā o tsukaimasu ka.
Do you use conditioner? - シャワーでひげを剃ります。
Shawā de hige o sorimasu.
I shave in the shower. (men’s facial hair) - シャワーでムダ毛の処理をします。
Shawā de mudage no shori o shimasu.
I shave (arms/legs) in the shower. - 新しい剃刀を買わなければいけません。
Atarashī kamisori o kawanakereba ikemasen.
I need to buy a new razor. - シェービングフォームはどこですか。
Shēbingu fōmu wa doko desu ka.
Where’s the shaving cream? - このボディーローションはとてもいい匂いですね。
Kono bodī rōshon wa totemo ī nioi desu ne.
This body lotion smells really good. - 私はナチュラルデオドラントを使っています。
Watashi wa nachuraru deodoranto o tsukatte imasu.
I use a natural deodorant. - 毛抜きはどこですか。
Kenuki wa doko desu ka.
Where are the tweezers?
香水と化粧 Kōsui to Keshō Perfume and Make Up
Some people’s morning bathroom routines include more than the basics. If you’re one of those people, you may want to know: 香水 kōsui perfume/cologne, 化粧 keshō makeup, マスカラ masukara mascara, アイシャドウ aishadō eye shadow, アイライナー airainā eyeliner, パウダー paudā powder, 口紅 kuchibeni lipstick, マニキュア manikyua nail polish, チークchīku blush/rouge, ジェル jeru hair gel, ヘアスプレー heasupurē hairspray.
- お化粧をしますか。
Okeshō o shimasu ka.
Do you wear makeup? - 毎朝お化粧をします。
Maiasa okeshō o shimasu.
I put on makeup every morning. - その香水の香りが好きです。いい匂いですね。
Sono kōsui no kaori ga suki desu. Ī nioi desu ne.
I like that cologne/perfume. It smells nice. - マスカラとアイライナーを塗ります。
Masukara to airainā o nurimasu.
I’m putting on mascara and eyeliner. - 何色のマニキュアを持っていますか。
Nani iro no manikyua o motte imasu ka.
What color nail polish do you have? - 毎日髪にジェルをつけています。
Mainichi kami ni jeru o tsukete imasu.
I use hair gel every day. - ヘアスプレーがありますか。
Heasupurē ga arimasu ka.
Do you have hairspray?
お手洗いを使ってもいいですか。 Otearai o tsukatte mo ī desu ka. Can I use your bathroom?
Of course, we also take care of more basic biological needs in the bathroom, most of which you probably don’t need to know how to talk about. But here are a few, because you never know!
- お手洗いに行ってきます。
Otearai ni itte kimasu.
I have to go to the bathroom. - ｛排尿・排便｝をしてきます。
{Hainyō/Haiben} o shite kimasu.
I have to urinate/defecate. - ｛おしっこ・うんち｝をしてきます。
{Oshikko/Unchi} o shite kimasu.
I have to pee/poop. - お手洗いはどこですか。
Otearai wa doko desu ka.
Where’s the bathroom? - お手洗いは廊下をまっすぐ行って｛左・右｝です。
Otearai wa rōka o massugu itte {hidari/migi} desu.
The bathroom is down the hall, to the left/right. - 入ってこないでください！トイレを使っています！
Haitte konaide kudasai! Toire o tsukatte imasu!
Don’t come in! I’m on the toilet! - トイレットペーパーがありません！
Toiretto pēpā ga arimasen!
There’s no toilet paper left! - トイレを流してください。
Toire o nagashite kudasai.
Please flush the toilet. - トイレが詰まってしまいました。ラバーカップはありますか。
Toire ga tsumatte shimaimashita. Rabākappu wa arimasu ka.
The toilet is clogged. Do you have a plunger?
