Fall is here, so let’s look at some Russian vocabulary and expressions that will come in handy this time of year.
Цвета Colors
Листья Leaves and красивые цвета beautiful colors are probably two of the first things that you think about when you think of fall. красные листья red leaves, оранжевые листья orange leaves, жёлтые листья yellow leaves, золотые листья gold leaves are everywhere at first, and then коричневые листья падают на землю. Brown leaves fall to the ground. Here is some leaf-peeping vocabulary in Russian.
- Листья меняют цвет.
The leaves are changing color. - Деревья красивы в это время года.
The trees are beautiful this time of year. - Весь склон золотистый.
The whole hillside is gold. - Листья падают с деревьев.
The leaves are falling off the trees.
Становится холоднее. It’s getting colder.
Прохладная Погода Cool Weather is probably the other thing that you first think of when you think of fall. If you live in a place where the seasons change a lot, you may want to say:
- Погода прохладная.
The weather is cool. - Дождливо и облачно..
It’s rainy and cloudy. - Дни прохладные/зябкие, а ночи холодные.
The days are chilly and the nights are cold. - Ветер играет листвой.
The wind is blowing the leaves. - Небо серое.
The sky is gray.
Дни становятся короче. The days are getting shorter.
With shorter fall days, you may want to say:
- Когда переход на летнее время?
When is daylight savings time? - Вы не забыли перевести время назад?
Did you remember to turn your clock back? - Темнеет рано.
It gets dark early. - Солнце садится рано.
The sun sets early. - Меньше солнечного света.
There’s less sunlight.
Осенняя одежда Autumn clothes
All of these fall changes probably mean a change in your wardrobe, too.
- Мне не нужны шорты и футболки.
I don’t need my shorts and tee shirts. - Я надеваю свитер.
I’m putting on a sweater. - Мне нужно надеть куртку.
I need to wear a jacket. - Мне нужно надеть шляпу и плащ.
I need to wear a hat and a raincoat. - Где мой зонт/зонтик?
Where’s my umbrella? - Давай положим на кровать ещё одно одеяло.
Let’s put an extra blanket on the bed.
Спокойные, тихие вечера Calm, Quiet Evenings
Many people find fall to be the most relaxing season, and other people find it to be a bit sad.
- Я останусь дома вечером.
I’m staying in tonight. - Я буду читать хорошую книгу вечером.
I’m reading a good book tonight. - Я пью чай.
I’m drinking a cup of tea. - Я раньше ложусь спать осенью.
I go to bed earlier in the fall. - Я всегда грущу осенью.
I always get sad in the fall. - Я скучаю по солнцу и длинным летним дням.
I miss the sun and the long days of summer. - Осень меня угнетает.
Fall depresses me.
Whether you say Я люблю осень, это моё любимое время года! I love fall, it’s my favorite season! or Я не люблю осень: темно, холодно и уныло. I don’t like fall, it’s dark and cold and depressing, we wish you a happy and healthy season.
