In this post we’ll look at some basic greetings, courtesy expressions, and survival expressions in Japanese.
こんにちは。 Kon’nichiwa. Hello. The Basics
Let’s start with basic greetings.
- こんにちは。 Kon’nichiwa. Hello. Good day. Good afternoon.
- どうも。 Doumo. Hi.
- おはようございます。Ohayougozaimasu. Good morning.
- こんばんは。Konbanwa. Good evening.
- おやすみなさい。 Oyasuminasai. Good night.
- さようなら。 Sayounara. Good-bye.
それではまた。Sore dewa mata. See You Soon.
Here are a few more friendly expressions that you might want to be able to use.
- (それ)ではまた。(Sore)dewa mata. See you soon. See you later.
- またあした。 Mata ashita. See you tomorrow.
- はじめまして。Hajimemashite. Nice to meet you.
お元気ですか。 Ogenki desu ka. How Are You?
Let’s see a few expressions that you can use when you meet someone, as well as a few more general courtesy and basic expressions.
- お元気ですか。
Ogenki desu ka.
How are you? - 元気です。
Genki desu.
I’m fine. - ありがとうございます。
Arigatou gozaimasu.
Thank you. - どういたしまして。
Dou itashimashite.
You’re welcome. - お願いします。
Onegaishimasu.
Please. (Asking a favor.) - どうぞ。
Douzo.
Please. (Offering a favor.) - すみません。
Sumimasen.
Excuse me. - ごめんなさい。
Gomen’nasai.
Sorry! - お名前は何ですか。
Onamae wa nan desu ka.
What is your name? - 私の名前は… です。
Watashi no namae wa… desu.
My name is… - 出身はどちらですか。
Shusshin wa dochira desu ka.
Where are you from? - 出身は… です。
Shusshin wa… desu.
I’m from…
分かりません。 Wakarimasen. I Don’t Understand.
Now let’s turn to some helpful survival expressions that you can use as you learn the language.
- 日本語は話せません。
Nihongo wa hanasemasen.
I can’t speak Japanese. - 英語が話せますか。
Eigo ga hanasemasu ka.
Do you speak English? - 分かりません。
Wakarimasen.
I don’t understand. - 日本語が少し話せます。
Nihongo ga sukoshi hanasemasu.
I only speak a little Japanese. - 日本語を勉強しています。
Nihongo o benkyoushite imasu.
I’m learning Japanese. - 日本語が少し分かります。
Nihongo ga sukoshi wakarimasu.
I understand a little Japanese. - もう一度言ってください。
Mou ichido itte kudasai.
Please repeat. - 書いてください。
Kaite kudasai.
Please write that. - …は日本語で何と言いますか。
…wa nihongo de nanto iimasuka.
