In this post we’ll cover some Japanese vocabulary and constructions that you can use to express your opinion, ask about other people’s opinions, agree, or disagree with someone.
この映画についてどう思いますか。 Kono ēga ni tsuite dō omoimasu ka. What do you think of this film?
Let’s start with some questions that you can ask to find out other people’s opinions.
- この｛映画・本｝が好きですか。
Kono {ēga/hon} ga suki desu ka.
Do you like this film/ this book? - この｛歌・絵｝についてどう思いますか。
Kono {uta/e} ni tsuite dō omoimasu ka.
What do you think of this song/ this painting? - このことについてどう思いますか。
Kono koto ni tsuite dō omoimasu ka.
What’s your opinion on this topic? - 私と同じ意見ですか。
Watashi to onaji iken desu ka.
Do you agree with me?
- この記事についてどう思いましたか。
Kono kiji ni tsuite dō omoimashita ka.
What did you think of the article? - ｛パーティー・授業｝はどうでしたか。
{Pāti/Jugyō} wa dō deshita ka.
How did you like the party/ the class? - この｛レストラン・本｝はお勧めですか。
Kono {resutoran/hon} wa osusume desu ka.
Do you recommend this restaurant/ this book? - どうしてそう思うんですか。
Dōshite sō omoun desu ka.
Why do you feel that way? - (Name of the listener)の意見について説明してくれますか。
(Name of the listener) no iken ni tsuite setsumēshite kuremasu ka.
Can you explain your opinion? - どこが好きなんですか。どうして好きなんですか。
Doko ga sukinan desu ka. Dōshite sukinan desu ka.
What do you like about it? Why do you like it? - どこが好きじゃないんですか。どうして好きじゃないんですか。
Doko ga suki janain desu ka. Dōshite suki janain desu ka.
What don’t you like about it? Why don’t you like it?
この映画はとても良かったです。 Kono ēga wa totemo yokatta desu. I liked the film very much.
Now let’s look at some expressions that you can use to express that you like something. Some vocabulary that might come in handy is: とてもいい really good – really good, great, 面白い、興味深い omoshiroi, kyōmibukai – interesting, 素晴らしい subarashī – fascinating, とても楽しい totemo tanoshī – very enjoyable, 今までにない、ユニーク imamade ni nai, unīku – original, 論理的 ronriteki – logical.
- 映画はとても良かったです。
Ēga wa totemo yokatta desu.
The film was really good/ great. - レストランは素晴らしかったです。
Resutoran wa subarashikatta desu.
The restaurant was wonderful/ fantastic. - パーティーはとても楽しかったです。
Pāti wa totemo tanoshikatta desu.
I had a great time at the party. - 本は素晴らしいと思いました。
Hon wa subarashī to omoimashita.
I thought the book was fascinating. - 記事はとても興味深いと思いました。
Kiji wa totemo kyōmibukai to omoimashita.
I found the article really interesting. - この歌はとてもいいと思います。
Kono uta wa totemo ī to omoimasu.
I think that this song is really good.
映画は全然よくありませんでした。 Ēga wa zenzen yoku arimasen deshita. I really didn’t like the film at all.
Now let’s look at some expressions that you can use to express that you don’t like something. Some vocabulary that might come in handy is: 酷い hidoi – really bad, terrible, awful つまらない tsumaranai – boring, オリジナリティに欠ける orijinaritī ni kakeru – unoriginal, 非論理的 hironriteki – illogical.
- 映画は酷かったです。
Ēga wa hidokatta desu.
The film was really bad/ awful. - レストランは酷かったです。
Resutoran wa hidokatta desu.
The restaurant was terrible. - パーティーはつまらなかったです。
Patī wa tsumaranakatta desu.
The party was boring. - 本はオリジナリティに欠けていると思いました。
Hon wa orijinaritī ni kakete iru to omoimashita.
I thought the book was unoriginal. - 記事は非論理的だと思いました。
Kiji wa hironriteki da to omoimashita.
I found the article really illogical. - この歌はひどいと思います。
Kono uta wa hidoi to omoimasu.
I think that this song is terrible. - ｛彼・彼女・この歌・ここ｝には我慢ができません。
{Kare/Kanojo/Kono uta/Koko} ni wa gaman ga dekimasen.
I can’t stand him/ her/ this song/ this place.
私たちは同じ意見ですね。 Watashitachi wa onaji iken desu ne. We agree.
Here are some expressions that you can use to show that you agree or disagree with someone.
- 私たちは同じ意見ですね。私も(name of the listener)と同じように思います。
Watashitachi wa onaji iken desu ne. Watashi mo (name of the listener) to onaji yō ni omoimasu.
We agree. I agree with you/ that. - 私たちの意見は違いますね。私は(name of the listener)の意見に同意しません。
Watashitachi no iken wa chigaimasu ne. Watashi wa (name of the listener) no iken ni dōishimasen.
We disagree. I don’t agree with you/ that. - その通りです。完全にその通りです。
Sono tōri desu. Kanzen ni sono tōri desu.
You’re right. You’re absolutely right. - 間違っています。完全に間違っています。
Machigatte imasu. Kanzen ni machigatte imasu.
You’re wrong. You’re totally wrong. - この｛本・映画｝について私も同じように思います。
Kono {hon/ēga} ni tsuite watashimo onaji yō ni omoimasu.
I feel the same way about this book/ film. - この｛歌・作家｝について私は違った見解を持っています。
Kono {uta/sakka} ni tsuite watashi wa chigatta kenkai o motte imasu.
I feel differently about this song/ writer. - それについて私も同じ意見です。
Sore ni tsuite watashi mo onaji iken desu.
I have the same opinion about it. - それについて私は違う意見です。
Sore ni tsuite watashi wa chigau iken desu.
I have a different opinion about it.
それは納得がいきます。 Sore wa nattoku ga ikimasu. That makes a lot of sense.
Here are some expressions and vocabulary that you can use if you think someone is making a good point.
- それはとてもいい指摘です。
Sore wa totemo ī shiteki desu.
That’s a really good point. - それは納得がいきます。
Sore wa nattoku ga ikimasu.
That makes a lot of sense. - それは理にかなっています。
Sore wa ri ni kanatte imasu.
That’s completely logical. - それは(name of the listener)の指摘・意見が正しいことを証明しますね。
Sore wa (name of the listener) no {shiteki/iken} ga tadashī koto o shomeshimasu ne.
That proves your point/ opinion. - 彼女はとてもいい例を挙げました。
Kanojo wa totemo ī rē o agemashita.
She gave really good examples. - 彼は自分の主張の根拠となる事柄をたくさん調べました。
Kare wa jibun no shuchō no konkyo to naru kotogara o takusan shirabemashita.
He did a lot of research to support his claim. - この｛記事・インタビュー｝で私の気持ちが変わりました。
Kono {kiji/intabyū} de watashi no kimochi ga kawarimashita.
The article/ The interview changed my mind. - それはとても説得力のある議論です。
Sore wa totemo settokuryoku no aru giron desu.
That’s very a convincing/ strong argument.
全く意味をなしません。 Mattaku imi o nashimasen. That makes no sense.
- それはとても悪い例です。
Sore wa totemo warui rē desu.
That’s a really bad example. - 全く意味をなしません。
Mattaku imi o nashimasen.
That makes no sense. - それは完全に非論理的です。
Sore wa kanzen ni hironriteki desu.
That’s totally illogical. - 論点が何なのかを示していませんよ。
Ronten ga nan nano ka o shimeshite imasen yo.
You’re not proving your point. - 言っていることの例が一つも挙げられていませんよ。
Itte iru koto no rē ga hitotsu mo agerarete imasen yo.
You have no examples of what you’re saying. - 意見を支持する証拠が一つもありませんよ。
Iken o shijisuru shōko ga hitotsumo arimasen yo.
There’s no evidence that supports your claim. - それはばかげています。
Sore wa bakagete imasu.
That’s ridiculous (absurd, stupid, idiotic).
