In this post we’re going to look at some basic Japanese vocabulary that you can use to talk about your town or city.

建物 tatemono, 道 michi: A Building, A Street

Let’s start with some basic general vocabulary: 建物、ビル tatemono, biru building; マンション、アパート manshon, apaato apartment building オフィスビル ofisubiru office building; 道 michi street; 高速道路 kousokudouro highway; 歩道 hodou sidewalk; 公園 kouen park; 駐車場 chuushajou parking lot; 駐車区間 chuusha kukan parking space; ホテル hoteru hotel.

• ホテルはどこですか。
  Hoteru wa doko desu ka.
  Where is the hotel?
• 近くに公園があります。
  Chikaku ni kōen ga arimasu.
  There’s a park near here.
• このマンションに部屋がいくつありますか。
  Kono manshon ni heya ga ikutsu arimasu ka.
  How many apartments are in this building?

店 mise: A Store

Now let’s look at how to say various kinds of stores: 店 mise store; コンビニ konbini convenience store; スーパー suupaa supermarket; 洋服屋 youfukuya clothing store; 靴屋 kutsuya shoe store; ジュエリーショップ juerii shoppu jewelry store; パン屋 pan’ya bakery; ケーキ屋 keekiya pastry shop; 肉屋 nikuya butcher; 金物屋 kanamonoya hardware store; 本屋 hon’ya bookstore; 家電量販店 kaden ryouhanten electronics store; 薬局 yakkyoku pharmacy.

• この通りには店がたくさんあります。
  Kono tōri niwa mise ga takusan arimasu.
  There are a lot of stores on this street.
• 私の町には大きなスーパーがあります。
  Watashi no machi niwa ōkina sūpā ga arimasu.
  There is a big supermarket in my town.
• この近くに｛靴屋・服屋・本屋｝がありますか。
  Kono chikaku ni {kutsuya/fukuya/hon’ya} ga arimasuka.
  Is there a shoe store/ clothing store/ bookstore nearby?

学校 gakkou: School

Now let’s look at vocabulary for other places around town: 学校 gakkou school; 図書館 toshokan library; 大学 daigaku university; 消防署 shoubousho firehouse; 郵便局 yuubinkyoku post office; 警察署 keisatsusho police station; 病院 byōin hospital; ガソリンスタンド gasorinsutando gas station; 教会 kyoukai church; シナゴーグ shinagoogu synagogue; 寺 tera temple; モスク mosuku mosque.

• 学生は学校にいます。
  Gakusei wa gakkō ni imasu.
  The students are at school.
• 市内に大学があります。
  Shinai ni daigaku ga arimasu.
  There’s a university in the city.
• 郵便局に行きます。
  Toshokan ni ikimasu.
  I’m going to the post office.
• 図書館に行きます。
  Toshokan ni ikimasu.
  I’m going to the library.

いいレストラン ii resutoran: A Good Restaurant

Now let’s look at vocabulary related to fun and entertainment: レストラン resutoran restaurant; バー baa  bar; 博物館hakubutsukan museum; 美術館bijutsukan art museum; 映画館 eigakan cinema/movie theater; 劇場 gekijou theater; アートギャラリー aato gyararii art gallery.

• いいレストランがありますか。
  Ī resutoran ga arimasu ka.
  Is there a good restaurant?
• 映画に行こう。
  Eiga ni ikou.
  Let’s go to the movies.
• アートギャラリーに行ってみたいです。
  Aato gyararii ni itte mitai desu.
  We want to visit an art gallery.

駅 eki: The Train Station

Now let’s look at some vocabulary related to getting around town: 駅 eki train station; バスターミナル basu taaminaru bus station; バス停 basutei bus stop; 空港 kuukou airport; 地下鉄の駅 chikatetsu no eki subway station.

• 駅は町にあります。
  Eki wa machi ni arimasu.
  The train station is downtown.
• 電車で市内に行きます。
  Densha de shinai ni ikimasu.
  I take the train to the city.
• バスで空港に行きます。
  Basu de kūkō ni ikimasu.
   I take the bus to the airport.

地下鉄はどこですか。 Chikatetsu wa doko desu ka. Where is the subway?

Let’s end with a few expressions related to asking directions: ここkoko here; あそこ asoko there, 右 migi to the right; 左 hidari to the left; 近くchikaku nearby; 遠い tooi far away.

• 地下鉄はどこですか。
  Chikatetsu wa doko desu ka.
  Where is the subway?
• ここです。
  Koko desu.
  It’s here.
• あそこです。
  Asoko desu.
  It’s there.
• 右です。
  Migi desu.
  It’s to the right.
• 左です。
  Hidari desu.
  It’s to the left.
• 近くです。
  Chikaku desu.
  It’s nearby.
• 遠いです。
  Tooi desu.
  It’s far away.
• ホテルの隣です。
  Hoteru no tonari desu.
  It’s next to the hotel.
• 通りの向かい側です。
  Toori no mukaigawa desu.
  It’s across the street.
• まっすぐ行ってください。
  Massugu itte kudasai.
  Go straight.
• 左に曲がってください。
  Hidari ni magatte kudasai.
  Turn left.
• 右に曲がってください。
  Migi ni magatte kudasai.
  Turn right.
