真是一部好电影。Zhēnshì yíbù hǎo diànyǐng. It’s a Great Film.

Everyone loves a good film. Well, maybe not everyone. If you’re more of a book person, check out this post. But if you like movies, let’s start with some really basic Chinese vocabulary.

    He’s my favorite actor.

你喜欢什么类型的电影?Nǐ xǐhuan shénme lèixíng de diànyǐng. What kind of movies do you like?

Most people enjoy certain kinds of films more than others. Let’s look at how to talk about movie genres, which ones you like, and which ones you don’t.

    I can’t stand musicals.
  • 我从不看恐怖片。
    Wǒ cóngbù kàn kǒngbù piàn.
    I never watch horror movies.
  • 犯罪片是我最喜欢的一类电影。
    Fànzuì piàn shì wǒ zuì xǐhuan de yílèi diànyǐng.
    Crime dramas are my favorite kind of movies.
  • 今晚想看一个喜剧片。
    Jīwǎn xiǎng kàn yígè xǐjù piàn.
    I feel like watching a comedy tonight.
  • 我不想看一个很严肃的电影。
    Wǒ bù xiǎng kàn yígè hěn yánsù de diànyǐng.
    I’m not in the mood for a serious movie.
  • 我不想看恐怖片。
    Wǒ bù xiǎng kàn kǒngbù piàn.
    I don’t want to watch a scary movie.
  • 我想看让人振奋的电影。
    Wǒ xiǎngkàn ràngrén zhènfèn de diànyǐng.
    I want to watch something uplifting.

我等不及要看那个电影了。Wǒ děngbùjí yàokàn nàge diànyǐng le. I can’t wait to see that film.

You may have a lot to say during the months (or years!) before a big film is released.

  • 电影什么时候上映?
    Diànyǐng shénme shíhòu shàngyìng?

    When is the film coming out?
  • 上映日期是什么时候?
    Shàngyìng rìqī shì  shénme shíhòu?

    What’s the release date?
  • 广受好评。
    Guǎngshòu hǎopíng.

    It’s getting really good reviews.
  • 评价很不好。
    Píngjià hěn bùhǎo.

    It’s getting really bad reviews.
  • 我非常喜欢他/她的最后一部电影。
    Wǒ fēicháng xǐhuan tāde zuìhòu yíbù diànyǐng.

    I loved his/her last movie.
  • 这是系列电影,我喜欢第一部。
    Zhèshì xìliè diànyǐng, wǒ xǐhuan dìyībù.

    It’s a sequel, and I loved the first movie.
  • 这是系列电影,我不喜欢第一部。
    Zhèshì xìliè diànyǐng, wǒ bù xǐhuan dìyībù.

    It’s a sequel, and I hated the first movie.
  • 你看过这部新电影的预告片了吗?
    Nǐkànguò zhèbù xīn diànyǐng de yùgàopìan le ma?

    Have you seen the trailer for the new movie yet?
  • 预告片看起来非常棒。
    Yùgàopìan kànqǐlái fēicháng bàng.

    The trailer looks really good.
  • 预告片看起来很糟糕。
    Yùgàopìan kànqǐlái hěn zāogāo.

    The trailer looks terrible.

在电影院Zài diànyǐngyuàn. At the Movies/Cinema

Here’s some vocabulary for when you finally get to the cinema to see the movie.

  • 我是在网上买的电影票。
    Wǒ shì zài wǎngshàng mǎi de diànyǐng piào.

    I bought tickets online.
  • 我们得在电影院买票。
    Wǒmen děi zài diànyǐng yuan mǎipiào.

    We have to buy tickets at the cinema.
  • 哇,电影票太贵了。
    Wā, diànyǐng piào tàiguìle.
    Wow, movie tickets are expensive!
  • 我们的座位很棒。
    Wǒmen de zuòwèi hěnbàng.

    We have great seats.
  • 我们的座位很糟糕。
    Wǒmen de zuòwèi hěn zāogāo.

    We have awful seats.
  • 我可以看得清清楚楚。
    Wǒ kěyǐkàn de qīngqīngchǔchǔ.

    I can see perfectly!
  • 我看不见,这个人挡住了我的视线。
    Wǒ kànbújiàn, zhègèrén dǎngzhù le wǒde shìxiàn.

    I can’t see a thing! This guy is blocking my view.
  • 我要买些爆米花。
    Wǒ yào mǎixiē bàomǐhuā.

    I feel like getting some popcorn.
  • 那些人讲话太大声了。
    Nàxiērén jiǎnghuà tàidàshēng le.

    Those people are talking too loud!
  • 电影院太挤了。
    Diànyǐng yuàn tàijǐle.

    The cinema is too crowded.
  • 安静。电影要开始了。
    Ānjìng.  Diànyǐng yào kāishǐle.
    Be quiet! The movie’s starting.
  • 我想去卫生间,但是我又不想错过一些情节。
    Wǒxiǎng qù wèishēngjiān, dànshì wǒ yòu bùxiǎng cuòguò yìxiē qíngjié.
    I have to go to the bathroom but I don’t want to miss anything!

我们在家看电影吧。Wǒmen zàijiā kàn diànyǐng ba. Let’s Watch the Movie At Home

For many people, watching movies at home is easier and more enjoyable.

  • 今晚我们上网看电影吧。
    Jīnwǎn wǒmen shàngwǎng kàn diànyǐng ba.

    Let’s stream a movie tonight.
  • 太多电影,都不知道选什么电影看了。
    Tàiduō diànyǐng, dōu bùzhīdaò xuǎn shémme diànyǐng kàn le.

    There are too many movies to choose from.
  • 我不想看那部电影。这部怎么样?
    Wǒ bùxiǎng kàn nàbù  diànyǐng. Zhèbù zěnmeyàng?

    I don’t feel like watching that movie. How about this one?
  • 遥控器在哪儿?
    Yáokòngqì zài nǎr?

    Where’s the remote [control]?
  • 暂停!我要去卫生间。
    Zàntíng! wǒ yào qù wèishēngjiān.

    Pause it! I have to go to the bathroom.
  • 倒退!她说了什么?
    Dàotuì! Tā shuōle shénme?
    Rewind! What did she say?

我非常喜欢那部电影。Wǒ fēicháng xǐhuan nàbù diànyǐng. I loved that movie.

Hopefully you really liked what you saw. If so, you may want to say this.

  • 这部电影太好看了/太棒了/太精彩了。
    Zhèbù diànyǐng tàihǎokàn le / tàibàngle/ tàijīngcǎile.

    The movie was great/fantastic/wonderful.
  • 表演很精彩。
    Biǎoyǎn hěn jīngcǎi.
    The acting was really good.
  • 情节很有创意。
    Qíngjié hěn yǒu chuàngyì.
    The plot was original.
  • 情节紧凑,引人入胜。
    QÍngjié jǐncòu, yǐn rén rù shèng.
    It was very fast-paced and exciting.
  • 我喜欢电影的主演。
    Wǒ xǐhuan diànyǐng de zhǔyǎn.
    I loved the main character.
  • 摄影很美。
    Shèyǐng hěn měi.
    The filming was beautiful.
  • 电影有一个大反转。
    Diànyǐng yǒu yígè dà fǎnzhuǎn.
    There was a surprising plot twist.
  • 我想再看一遍那部电影。
    Wǒ xiǎng zài kàn yíbiàn nàbù diànyǐng.
    I would see that movie again.
  • 我强烈推荐它,你值得一看。
    Wǒ qiángliè tuījiàn tā, nǐzhíde yíkàn.
    I highly recommend it, you should see it!

我讨厌那部电影。Wǒ tǎoyàn nàbù diànyǐng. I hated that movie.

But of course, lots of movies are complete duds.

  • 这部电影太糟糕了。
    Zhèbù diànyǐng tài zāogāo le.

    The movie was terrible/awful.
  • 演技太烂了。
    Yǎnjì tài làn le.

    The acting was really bad.
  • 情节没有创意。
    Qíngjié méiyǒu chuàngyì.

    The plot was unoriginal.
  • 这部电影太慢,太无聊了。
    Zhèbù diànyǐng tàimàn, tài wúliáo le.

    This film was very slow and boring.
  • 我不喜欢这部电影的主演。
    Wǒ bù xǐhuan zhèbù diànyǐng de zhùyǎn.

    I didn’t like the main character.
  • 摄影太糟糕了。
    Shèyǐng tài zāogāo le.

    The filming was bad.
  • 剧情完全可以预测。
    Jùqíng wánquán kěyǐ yùcè.

    The plot was completely predictable.
  • 那部电影简直是浪费时间和钱。
    Nàbù diànyǐng jiǎnzhí shì làngfèi shíjiān hé qián.

    That movie was a waste of time and money!
  • 千万别看那部电影,你不会喜欢它的。
    Qiānwàn bié kàn nàbù diànyǐng, nǐ búhuì xǐhua tā de.

    Don’t see that movie, you would hate it.
