A Casa: At Home: Basic Italian Vocabulary

In this post we’ll learn some basic Italian vocabulary related to homes.

Una Casa, Un’appartamento: A House, An Apartment

Let’s start with some basic vocabulary: la casa house; l’appartamento (m.) apartment; la camera room; il soggiorno living room; la cucina kitchen; il bagno bathroom; la camera da letto bedroom; la sala da pranzo dining room; il seminterrato basement; la soffitta attic; il viale  driveway; la finestra window; la parete wall; il soffitto ceiling; il pavimento  floor; la porta door.

  • Vado a casa.
    I’m going home.
  • Siamo a casa. / Non siamo a casa.
    We are home. / We aren’t home.
  • Abiti in una casa o in un appartamento?
    Do you live in a house or an apartment?
  • Quante stanze ci sono nella tua casa/appartamento?
    How many rooms are there in your house/apartment?

La Cucina, La Sala da Pranzo: The Kitchen, The Dining Room

Now let’s focus on basic vocabulary related to the kitchen: il frigorifero  refrigerator; il fornello stove; il piano cottura cooker; il forno oven; il lavello  sink; la lavastoviglie  dishwasher: la credenza  cupboard; il tavolo table; il cassetto drawer; la forchetta  fork; il coltello knife; il cucchiaio spoon; il piatto plate; la ciotola  bowl; la tazza cup; il bicchiere glass; il tovagliolo napkin;

  • Ho una piccola cucina.
    I have a small kitchen.
  • Cucino in cucina.
    I cook in the kitchen.
  • Il cibo è nel frigorifero.
    The food is in the refrigerator.
  • Ci sono un tavolo e sei sedie nella sala da pranzo.
    There are a table and six chairs in the dining room.
  • Ceniamo in sala da pranzo.
    We eat dinner in the dining room.

Il Soggiorno: The Living Room

Here is some vocabulary related to the living room: il divano sofa; la televisione television; la tenda  curtain; il tappeto rug; la libreria bookshelf; la lampada  lamp.

  • Ci sono un divano e due sedie nel soggiorno.
    There are a sofa and two chairs in the living room.
  • Guardiamo la TV in soggiorno.
    We watch TV in the living room.

La Camera da Letto: The Bedroom

Here is some basic vocabulary related to the bedroom: il letto bed; il cuscino pillow; la coperta  blanket; il lenzuolosheet; la scrivania desk.

  • Dormo nella mia camera da letto.
    I sleep in my bedroom.
  • Ho una scrivania nella mia camera da letto.
    I have a desk in my bedroom.
  • C’è una lampada sulla scrivania.
    There is a lamp on the desk.

Il Bagno: The Bathroom

And finally, let’s see some vocabulary related to the bathroom: il gabinetto toilet; il lavandino, il lavabo bathroom sink; la doccia  shower; la vasca da bagno bathtub: l’asciugamano (m.) towel; la carta igienica toilet paper; lo spazzolino toothbrush; il dentifricio toothpaste; il sapone soap; lo shampoo  shampoo; la spazzola  brush; il pettine comb; il rasoio razor.

  • Dov’è il bagno?
    Where is the bathroom?
  • Faccio la doccia in bagno.
    I take a shower in the bathroom.
