It’s September, which means that the school year has begun. In this post, let’s see some vocabulary and expressions that will help you talk about school in Spanish.

¿A qué escuela vas? Where do you go to school?

Lets start with some basic vocabulary.

• la escuela, el colegio
  school
• la escuela primaria, la escuela secundaria/el bachillerato, la universidad
  primary school, high school, university
• el/la estudiante, el profesor/la profesora
  student, teacher, professor

• Es una estudiante de bachillerato/de secundaria.
  She’s a high school student.
• Está en la escuela primaria.
  He/She goes to primary school.
• ¿En qué grado está él/ella?
  What grade is he/she in?
• ¿Qué estás estudiando en la universidad?
  What are you studying at university?

En el aula In the classroom

Here’s some vocabulary to help you talk about the classroom.

• el aula/el salón de clases, el pupitre, el estante para libros/ la biblioteca, el cuaderno
  classroom, student’s desk, bookshelf, notebook
• el escritorio, la pizarra/el pizarrón, la pizarra blanca, el mapa, el mapamundi
  teacher’s desk, blackboard, whiteboard, map, globe
• el cuaderno, el papel, el lápiz, el bolígrafo, el borrador
  notebook, paper, pencil, pen, eraser
• la tableta, la pantalla, la calculadora
  tablet, screen, calculator
• estudiar, aprender, escuchar, presentar un examen, prestar atención, tomar notas
  to study, to learn, to listen, to take a test, to pay attention, to take notes
• Esta aula es grande/pequeña. Este salón es grande/pequeño.
  This classroom is big/small.
• El profesor/La profesora escribe en la pizarra.
  The teacher writes on the whiteboard.
• Los estudiantes toman apuntes/notas.
  The students take notes.
• Los estudiantes escuchan al profesor/a la profesora.
  The students listen to the teacher.
• Los estudiantes prestan atención al profesor/a la profesora.
  The students pay attention to the teacher.
• Tengo una pregunta.
  I have a question.
• El profesor/La profesora responde las preguntas de los estudiantes.
  The teacher answers the students’ questions.
• El profesor/La profesora enseña. Los estudiantes aprenden.
  The teacher teaches. The students learn.

Los deberes/ la tarea homework

If you’re in primary school or high school, you probably have a lot of opportunity to say things like:

• Mañana tenemos un examen.
  We have a test tomorrow.
• Voy a hacer un examen.
  I’m taking a test.
• Tengo que estudiar.
  I have to study.
• Tengo muchos deberes / mucha tarea.
  I have a lot of homework.
• Tengo que memorizar el vocabulario nuevo.
  I have to memorize new vocabulary.
• Todas las noches hago mis deberes/mi tarea.
  I do homework every night.
• Salí bien/mal en el examen. Saqué una buena/mala calificación en el examen.
  I got a good/bad grade on the test.
• Aprobé./Reprobé.
  I passed/failed the class.

Here’s some vocabulary for talking about the subjects you like, and the ones you don’t.

• Mi materia preferida es historia.
  History is my favorite subject.
• Soy bueno/buena para los idiomas.
  I’m good at languages.
• Salgo bien en biología.
  I’m doing well in biology.
• Saco buenas calificaciones en biología.
  I’m getting good grades in biology.
• ¿Qué materia te gusta menos?
  What’s your least favorite subject?
• No me gusta matemática.
  I don’t like math.
• Soy malo/mala en ciencias.
  I’m bad at science.
• No entiendo nada de química.
  I don’t understand chemistry.
• Salgo muy mal en física.
  I’m doing poorly in physics.
• Saco malas calificaciones en física.
  I’m getting bad grades in physics.

If you’re  un estudiante universitario/ una estudiante universitaria university student, you’ll probably have a chance to use this vocabulary.

• la clase/la conferencia, el seminario
  lecture, seminar
• el auditorio, la sala de conferencias, el laboratorio
  auditorium, lecture hall, laboratory
• Hoy tengo clases.
  I have class today.
• Esta tarde no tengo clases.
  I don’t have class this afternoon.
• Estudio en la librería.
  I study in the library.
• Estoy investigando.
  I’m doing research.
• Estoy escribiendo un artículo (de investigación).
  I’m writing a research paper.
• Estoy haciendo un experimento.
  I’m doing an experiment.
• ¿Sobre qué es tu tesis? ¿De qué trata tu tesis?
  What’s your thesis on?
• Estoy haciendo/redactando mi tesis.
  I’m writing my thesis.
• Vivo en una habitación.
  I live in a dormitory.
• Tengo un compañero/a de cuarto.
