En Casa At Home: Basic Spanish Vocabulary

In this post we’ll look at some basic Spanish vocabulary that you can use to talk about daily life at home.

Una casa, un apartamento: A House, An Apartment

Let’s start with some basic vocabulary: una casa house; un apartamento apartment; una habitación room; un salón living room; una cocina kitchen; un baño bathroom; un dormitorio bedroom; un comedor dining room; un sótano basement; un ático attic; un garaje driveway; una ventana window; una pared wall; un techo ceiling; un piso floor; una puerta door.

  • Me voy a casa.
    I’m going home.
  • Estamos en casa. / No estamos en casa.
    We are home. / We aren’t home.
  • ¿Vives en casa o apartamento?
    Do you live in a house or an apartment?
  • ¿Cuántas habitaciones tiene tu (su) casa/apartamento?
    How many rooms are there in your house/apartment?

La cocina y el comedor: The Kitchen and the Dining Room

Now let’s focus on basic vocabulary related to the kitchen: un refrigerador refrigerator; una estufa stove, cooker; un horno oven; un fregadero sink; un lavaplatos dishwasher: una alacena cupboard; una mesa table; una gaveta drawer; un tenedor fork; un cuchillo knife; una cuchara spoon; un plato plate; un tazón bowl; una taza cup; un vaso glass; una servilleta napkin.

  • Tengo una cocina pequeña.
    I have a small kitchen.
  • Cocino en la cocina.
    I cook in the kitchen.
  • La comida está en la nevera / en el refrigerador.
    The food is in the refrigerator.
  • Hay una mesa y seis sillas en el comedor.
    There are a table and six chairs in the dining room.
  • Cenamos en el comedor.
    We eat dinner in the dining room.

El salón: The Living Room

Here is some vocabulary related to the living room: un sofá sofa; un televisor television; una cortina curtain; una alfombra rug; un estante bookshelf; una lámpara lamp.

  • Hay un sofá y dos sillas en la sala / en el salón.
    There are a sofa and two chairs in the living room.
  • Vemos TV en la sala / en el salón.
    We watch TV in the living room.

La habitación: The Bedroom

Here is some basic vocabulary related to the bedroom: una cama bed; una almohada pillow; una cobija blanket; una sábana sheet; un escritorio desk.

  • Duermo en mi habitación.
    I sleep in my bedroom.
  • Tengo un escritorio en mi habitación.
    I have a desk in my bedroom.
  • Hay una lámpara en el escritorio.
    There is a lamp on the desk.

El baño: The Bathroom

And finally, let’s see some vocabulary related to the bathroom: un sanitario toilet; un lavamanos bathroom sink; una ducha shower; una bañera bathtub: una toalla towel; un papel higiénico toilet paper; un cepillo de dientes toothbrush; una pasta de dientes toothpaste; un jabón soap; un shampú shampoo; un cepillo brush; un peine comb; una rasuradora razor.

  • ¿Dónde está el baño?
    Where is the bathroom?
  • Me ducho en el baño.
    I take a shower in the bathroom.
