In this post we’ll look at some basic greetings, courtesy expressions, and survival expressions in German.

Hallo! Hello! The Basics

Let’s start with basic greetings.

• Hallo. Hello.
• Guten Morgen. Good morning.
• Guten Tag. Good day. Good afternoon.
• Guten Abend. Good evening.
• Gute Nacht. Good night.
• Auf Wiedersehen. Good-bye.

Bis bald! See You Soon!

Here are a few more friendly expressions that you might want to be able to use.

• Bis bald. See you soon.
• Bis später. See you later.
• Bis morgen. See you tomorrow.
• Sehr angenehm. Nice to meet you.
• Schlaf(t) gut! Sleep well!

Wie geht’s? How Are You?

Let’s see a few expressions that you can use when you meet someone, as well as a few more general courtesy and basic expressions.

• Wie geht’s? Wie geht es Ihnen?
  How are you? (informal, formal)
• Mir geht es gut.
  I’m fine.
• Danke.
  Thank you.
• Keine Ursache./Bitte.
  You’re welcome.
• Bitte.
  Please.
• Entschuldigung.
  Excuse me.
• Tut mir leid!
  Sorry!
• Wie heißt du? Wie heißen Sie?
  What is your name? (informal, formal)
• Ich heiße…
  My name is…
• Woher kommst du? Woher kommen Sie?
  Where are you from? (informal, formal)
• Ich komme aus…
  I’m from…

Ich verstehe nicht. I Don’t Understand.

Now let’s turn to some helpful survival expressions that you can use as you learn the language.

• Ich spreche kein Deutsch.
  I don’t speak German.
• Sprichst du Englisch? Sprechen Sie Englisch?
  Do you speak English? (informal, formal)
• Ich verstehe nicht.
  I don’t understand.
• Ich spreche nur ein bisschen Deutsch.
  I only speak a little German.
• Ich lerne Deutsch.
  I’m learning German.
• Ich verstehe ein bisschen Deutsch.
  I understand a little German.
• Noch einmal, bitte.
  Please repeat.
• Können Sie das bitte aufschreiben?
  Please write that.
• Wie sagt man… auf Deutsch?
