In this post we’ll look at some Italian vocabulary and expressions for an important part of everyday life: la cucina the kitchen. Cucini? Do you cook? No matter how you answer, you probably spend a decent amount of time in the kitchen, so let’s dig in.
Le Posate: i piatti, i bicchieri, le forchette Silverware: Plates, Cups, Forks
Let’s start with the things you use to eat. Of course the basics are: il piatto plate, la ciotola bowl, il coltello knife, il cucchiaio spoon, la forchetta fork, le bacchette chopsticks, la tazza/tazzina cup, il bicchiere glass, il tovagliolo napkin.
- Dove sono le posate (le forchette, i coltelli, e i cucchiai)?
Where is the silverware? (the forks, knives, and spoons)? - Le posate (le forchette, i coltelli, e i cucchiai) sono nel cassetto.
The silverware is (the forks, knives, and spoons are) in the drawer. - I bicchieri puliti sono nell’armadietto.
The clean glasses are in the cabinet.
- Le tazzine per il caffè sono sulla mensola/sul ripieno/sullo scaffale.
The coffee cups are on the shelf. - Ho rotto un bicchiere di vino.
I broke a wine glass. - Usi bacchette di legno o di metallo?
Do you use wooden or metal chopsticks? - Potrei avere un tovagliolo, per favore?
Could I have a napkin, please? - Hai ciotole più grandi per la zuppa?
Do you have bigger bowls for the soup? - Si prega di mettere i piatti puliti nell’armadietto.
Please put the clean plates in the cabinet.
Gli elettrodomestici Kitchen Appliances
Even if you don’t have a lot of gadgets in your kitchen, you’ve probably got most of these: un frigorifero a refrigerator, una cucina/un fornello a stove/cooker, un forno an oven, un forno a microonde a microwave oven, un tostapane a toaster, un lavandino a sink, una lavastoviglie a dishwasher.
- Il latte è in frigorifero.
The milk is in the refrigerator. - Chiudi la porta del frigorifero per favore!
Close the refrigerator door please! - Cucino la zuppa sulla cucina.
I cook soup on the stove. - Faccio torte e pane nel forno.
I bake cakes and bread in the oven. - Riscaldo gli avanzi nel microonde.
I reheat leftovers in the microwave. - Faccio i toast nel tostapane.
I make toast in the toaster. - I piatti sporchi sono nel lavandino.
The dirty dishes are in the sink. - Devo svuotare la lavastoviglie.
I need to empty the dishwasher.
And depending on where you live and what you like to eat, there’s also: il cuociriso a rice maker, la macchinetta del caffè (la caffettiera) a coffee maker, il bollitore elettrico an electric kettle, la pentola a cottura lenta a slow cooker, la friggitrice ad aria an air fryer, la macchina del pane a bread machine, la gelatiera an ice-cream maker, la friggitrice a deep fryer.
- Uso sempre il cuociriso. Non cucino mai il riso sui fornelli.
I always use a rice cooker. I never cook rice on the stove. - Abbiamo bisogno di una nuova caffettiera.
We need a new coffee maker. - Faccio bollire l’acqua nel bollitore elettrico.
I boil water in the electric kettle. - Usi spesso la tua pentola a cottura lenta?
Do you use your slow cooker often? - Le friggitrici ad aria non usano molto olio.
Air friers don’t use a lot of oil. - Faccio il pane nella macchina per il pane.
I make bread in the bread maker. - Ho ricevuto una gelatiera per il mio compleanno.
I got an ice cream maker for my birthday. - Le friggitrici usano molto olio.
Deep friers use a lot of oil.
Il Tagliere e il contenitore Cutting boards and Mixing Bowls
No matter how much you cook, you probably have at least a few of these: un tagliere a cutting board, un set di coltelli a set of knives, un contenitore a mixing bowl, una insalatiera a salad bowl, un cucchiaio di legno a wooden spoon, un mestolo a ladle, un robot da cucina a food processor, un frullatore elettrico an electric mixer, un wok a wok, una teglia a baking sheet/pan, una padella a frying pan, una pentola a pot.
- Ho tagliato le verdure su un tagliere.
I cut vegetables on a cutting board. - Non c’è spazio sul piano cucina.
There’s no space on the counter. - Hai un set di coltelli affilati?
Do you have a set of sharp knives? - Mescolo gli ingredienti in un contenitore.
I mix ingredients in a mixing bowl. - Mescolo la zuppa con un cucchiaio di legno.
I stir soup with a wooden spoon. - Uso un mestolo per servire la zuppa.
I use a ladle to serve soup. - I robot da cucina sono veloci e utili.
Food processors are fast and convenient. - Usi spesso il frullatore elettrico?
Do you use the electric mixer often? - I biscotti sono sulla teglia.
The cookies are on the baking sheet. - Cucino il pesce in una teglia.
I cook fish in a baking pan. - Uso molto spesso il wok.
I use the wok very often. - Cucino le uova in una padella.
I cook eggs in a frying pan. - Hai una pentola capiente per la zuppa?

I Recipienti, i barattoli di vetro e i sacchetti Containers, Jars, and Bags
Different foods are stored in different types of containers, so may want to say:
- una scatola di pasta / di biscotti / di cereali
a box of pasta/cookies/cereal - un sacchetto di patate / una busta di verdure surgelate
a bag of potatoes/frozen vegetables - una bottiglia di acqua / vino
a bottle of water/wine - un cartone di latte / succhi di frutta
a carton of milk/juice - una barattolo di fagioli /una zuppa in barattolo / una scatoletta di tonno
a can of beans/tuna/soup - un vasetto di olive / di sottaceti /una confettura di frutta
a jar of olives/pickles/fruit preserves - un contenitore di ketchup /maionese
a container of ketchup/mayonnaise - una confezione di pollo / tofu
a package of chicken/tofu
La cucina è pulita! The kitchen is clean!
Even if you don’t use it much, the kitchen always seems to need cleaning. And there’s a whole set of vocabulary that you can use to talk about that: una scopa a broom, un mocio a mop, una spugna a sponge, il detersivo per piatti dish detergent, uno straccio (strofinaccio) a dishtowel, un detergente spray a spray cleaner, un tovagliolo di carta a paper towel, un secchio a bucket, il detersivo per pavimenti floor cleaner, il cestino dei rifiuti trash can/bin.
- Devo lavare i piatti.
I need to do the dishes. - Dobbiamo comprare il detersivo per i piatti.
We need to buy dish detergent. - Uso una spugna e uno straccio per lavare i piatti.
I use a sponge and a dishtowel to do the dishes. - Spazzo il pavimento con una scopa.
I sweep the floor with a broom. - Lavo il pavimento quando è sporco.
I mop the floor when it’s dirty. - Pulisco il piano cucina con un tovagliolo di carta e un detersivo spray.
I wipe the counter with a paper towel and a spray cleaner. - Metto il detersivo per pavimenti e l’acqua calda nel secchio.
I put floor cleaner and warm water in the bucket. - Devo portare fuori la spazzatura.
I need to take out the trash. - Il cestino dei rifiuti ha un cattivo odore!
The trashcan smells bad!
