In this post we’ll look at Portuguese question words and how to use them.
Sim, Não: Yes, No
Let’s start with some general vocabulary and expressions related to questions: uma pergunta a question; sim yes; não no; talvez maybe; ou or.
- Tenho uma pergunta.
I have a question. - Posso lhe fazer uma pergunta?
Can I ask you a question? - Eu não sei.
I don’t know. - Eu não tenho certeza.
I’m not sure. - Tenho certeza.
I am sure. - Isto é chá ou café?
Is this tea or coffee? - Você quer água ou suco?
Do you want water or juice? - Este é o seu hotel?
Is this your hotel? - Sim, este é o meu hotel.
Yes, it’s my hotel. - Não, este não é o meu hotel.
No, it’s not my hotel.
GRAMMAR TIP! Notice that you can just use question intonation without changing word order to form a yes/no question: Este é o seu hotel. This is your hotel. Este é o seu hotel? Is this your hotel?
O que?What?
To ask what, use o que.
- O que é isto?
What is this? - O que você está fazendo?
What are you doing?
Quem? Who?
To ask who, use quem.
- Quem é aquele?
Who is that? - Com quem você vai viajar?
Who are you traveling with?
Onde? Where?
To ask where, use onde.
- Onde é o banheiro?
Where’s the bathroom? - Onde você mora?
Where do you live? - Onde você vai?
Where are you going? - De onde você é?
Where are you from?
Quando? When?
To ask when, use quando. A related question is a que horas? at what time?
- Quando você chega / parte?
When do you arrive/leave? - Quando o trem parte / chega?
When does the train leave/arrive? - Quando a loja abre / fecha?
When does the store open/close? - A que horas começa o filme?
At what time does the film start?
Como? How?
To ask how, use como.
- Como se diz “alô”?
How do you say “hello?” - Como você vai ao trabalho?
How do you go to work? - Como ele / ela é fisicamente?
What does he/she look like? - Como você se chama?
What’s your name?
Quanto? How much?
To ask how much, use quanto/quanta. To ask how many, use quantos / quantas.
- Quanto custa isto?
How much does this cost? - Quantas pessoas?
How many people? - Quanto tempo temos?
How much time do we have? - Quanto açucar você quer?
How much sugar do you want?
GRAMMAR TIP! Quanto agrees with the noun it modifies: quanto tempo? (how much time?) quanta água? (how much water?), quantos carros? (how many cars?), quantas pessoas? (how many people?)
Por que? Why?
To ask why, use por que.
- Por que você está aqui?
Why are you here? - Por que você esta triste?
Why are you sad? - Estou triste porque está chovendo.
I’m sad because it’s raining.
