In this post we’ll cover basic Portuguese vocabulary related to time, days, and dates.
Dia, Noite: Day, Night
Let’s start with some basic vocabulary related to time of day: o dia day; a noite night; a manhã morning; a tarde afternoon; a noite evening.
- É cedo / tarde.
It’s early/late. - Eu durmo à noite.
I sleep at night. - Trabalho durante o dia.
I work during the day. - Nós lemos à noite.
We read in the evening.
Que horas são? What time is it?
To ask what time it is, use que horas são? The answer will follow the format: É uma hora (it’s one o’clock) or São ___ horas (it is ___ o’clock for times later than one.) The phrase e meia means and half, and it’s used to express half past an hour. Portuguese sometimes uses the 24-hour clock for official/formal times, for instance departures.

What time is it? - São meio-dia.
It’s noon. - É uma hora.
It’s 1:00. - São duas horas.
It’s 2:00. - São três e meia.
It’s 3:30. - São cinco e quarenta e cinco. São quinze para as seis.
It’s 5:45. - À que horas parte o trem?
When does the train leave? - O trem parte à uma e meia da tarde.
O trem parte às treze e trinta.
The train leaves at one thirty in the afternoon. - À que horas a loja abre / fecha?
What time does the store open/close? - A loja abre às dez da manhã.
The store opens at ten o’clock in the morning.
Que dia é hoje? What day is it today?
The days of the week in Portuguese are: segunda-feira / segunda Monday; terça-feira / terça Tuesday; quarta-feira / quarta Wednesday; quinta-feira / quinta Thursday; sexta-feira / sexta Friday; sábado Saturday; domingo Sunday. Some other key vocabulary is: hoje today, amanhã tomorrow, ontem yesterday, hoje à noite tonight, a semana the week, o fim de semana the weekend.

What day is it today? - Trabalho às segundas, terças, quartas, quintas e sextas.
I work on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. - Vemos nossos amigos todos os sábados.
We see our friends every Saturday. - O que você vai / vocês vão fazer hoje à noite?
What are you doing tonight? - O que você fez / vocês fizeram ontem?
What did you do yesterday? - Vejo você / vocês no fim de semana.
I’ll see you this weekend.
Esta semana: This Week
Some other important vocabulary to know when you’re talking about dates and times are: a semana week; o mês month, o ano year.
- esta semana. este mês, este ano
this week, this month, this year - a semana passada, o mês passado, o ano passado
last week, last month, last year - a semana que vem, o mês que vem, o ano que vem
next week, next month, next year - A aula começa na semana / no mês / no ano que vem.
The class starts next week/ month/ year. - A aula começou na semana passada / no mês passado/ no ano passado.
The class started last week/ month/ year.
Qual a data de hoje? What’s the date today?
The months of the year are: janeiro January, fevereiro February, março March, abril April, maio May, junho June, julho July, agosto August, setembro September, outubro October, novembro November, dezembro December.
- Quando é o seu aniversário?
When is your birthday? - O meu aniversário é no dia vinte e quatro de novembro.
My birthday is on November twenty-fourth. - A minha família chega no dia dois de agosto.
My family arrives on August second. - Vamos sair de férias do dia oito de julho até o dia vinte de julho.
We go on vacation from July eighth through July twentieth.
