In this post we’ll talk about clothing in Spanish.
Llevo una camisa negra. I’m wearing a black shirt.
Let’s start with the basics: la ropa (clothes); una camisa (a shirt); unos pantalones (pants); unos jeans, unos vaqueros (jeans); una camiseta (a tee shirt); un cinturón, una correa (a belt); llevar, usar (to wear); vestirse (to get dressed); desvestirse (to get undressed); ponerse una camisa (to put on a shirt), quitarse una camisa (to take off a shirt).
- Llevo una camisa blanca.
I’m wearing a white shirt. - Los fines de semana siempre uso/llevo jeans.
I always wear jeans on the weekend. - Llevo/Estoy usando unos jeans y una camiseta.
I’m wearing jeans and a tee shirt.
- Estos jeans son demasiado grandes. Necesito un cinturón.
These jeans are too big. I need a belt. - Me pongo/Me estoy poniendo una camisa.
I’m putting on a shirt. - Me quito/Me estoy quitando los jeans.
I’m taking off my jeans. - Me visto todas las mañanas.
I get dressed every morning. - Me desvisto/Me quito la ropa antes de acostarme.
I take my clothes off before bed.
Es bonita esa blusa. That’s a nice blouse.
Now let’s look at some more vocabulary for less casual clothing: un vestido (a dress); una falda (a skirt); una blusa (a blouse); un traje (a man’s suit); un traje (a woman’s suit); una corbata (a tie); una chaqueta (de vestir) (a suit jacket); un esmoquin (a tuxedo); un vestido de novia (a wedding dress).
- Ella suele usar/llevar una falda y una blusa para trabajar.
She usually wears a skirt and a blouse at work. - Ella lleva/usa una falda negra y una blusa blanca.
She’s wearing a black skirt and a white blouse. - Él suele usar traje y corbata para trabajar.
He usually wears a suit and tie at work. - Su vestido rojo es hermoso.
Her red dress is beautiful. - Él tiene muchos trajes azules.
He has a lot of blue suits. - Es un evento formal, entonces va a usar un esmoquin.
It’s a formal event, so he’s wearing a tuxedo. - La novia está usando un vestido (de novia) hermoso.
The bride is wearing a beautiful wedding dress. - ¿De qué color es la corbata que vas a usar con esa chaqueta?
What color tie are you going to wear with that jacket?
¡Hace frío! Voy a usar un suéter. It’s cold! I’m wearing a sweater.
Now let’s look at some clothing you may wear when it’s cold: un suéter, un jersey (a sweater); una sudadera (a sweatshirt); un abrigo (a coat); una chaqueta (a jacket); unos guantes (gloves); unos mitones (mittens); una bufanda, un pañuelo (a scarf); un sombrero (a hat); un gorro (a knitted winter hat) un impermeable (a raincoat); un paraguas (an umbrella); un suéter/ una sudadera con capucha (a hoodie).
- Cuando hace frío me pongo un suéter.
I put on a sweater when it’s chilly. - ¿Me presta(s) un suéter con capucha?
Can I borrow a hoodie? - Voy a llevar mu chaqueta. A lo mejor hace frío esta noche.
I’m going to bring my jacket. It may be chilly tonight. - Él siempre lleva/usa una chaqueta de jean / de cuero / de motociclista.
He always wears a jeans jacket / a leather jacket / a motorcycle jacket. - Cuando hace frío llevo/uso un abrigo, un gorro y una bufanda.
I wear a coat, a hat, and a scarf when it’s cold. - No olvide(s) tus guantes/mitones.
Don’t forget your gloves/mittens. - Hoy va(s) a necesitar un gorro/una gorra/un sombrero.
You need a hat today. - Hace frío en mi apartamento, por eso estoy usando una sudadera.
It’s cold in my apartment, so I’m wearing a sweatshirt. - Está lloviendo, pero no tengo mi paraguas.
It’s raining, but I don’t have my umbrella. - Hoy voy a usar un (abrigo/una chaqueta) impermeable.
I’m going to wear a raincoat today.
¡Hace calor! Voy a usar pantalones cortos. It’s hot! I’m wearing shorts.
When the weather is hot, you probably want to know how to say: unos pantalones cortos, unos shorts (shorts); un traje de baño, un bañador (a bathing suit); un bañador (swimming trunks); un biquini (a bikini); una camiseta sin mangas (a tank top); unas gafas de sol (sunglasses); una gorra (a baseball cap).
- Hoy hace mucho calor, por eso estoy usando pantalones cortos/shorts.
It’s really hot today, so I’m wearing shorts. - Me pongo un traje de baño/bañador cuando voy a la playa/piscina.
I put on a bathing suit when I go to the beach/pool. - Él lleva un bañador y ella un biquini.
He’s wearing swimming trunks, and she’s wearing a bikini. - Él siempre usa camisetas sin mangas durante el verano.
He always wears tank tops in the summer. - Hace sol. ¿Necesitas tus/Necesita sus gafas de sol?
It’s sunny. Do you need your sunglasses? - Siempre llevo/uso una gorra.
I always wear a baseball cap.
Necesito zapatos nuevos. I need new shoes.
Now let’s look at some footwear: unos zapatos (shoes); unos calcetines, unas medias (socks); unas zapatillas de deporte (sneakers); unas sandalias (sandals); unas chanclas, una chancletas (flip-flops); unas botas (boots); unas pantuflas (slippers); unos tacones (heels); unos tacones altos (high heels); unos cordones, unas agujetas (shoe laces).
- Él está usando zapatos de cuero negro.
He’s wearing black leather shoes. - Ella suele llevar/usar tacones para trabajar.
She usually wears heels to work. - El fin de semana siempre uso/llevo zapatillas de deporte.
I always wear sneakers on the weekend. - En la playa uso chanclas.
I wear flip-flops at the beach. - Suelo usar/llevar sandalias durante el verano.
I usually wear sandals in the summer. - Por favor, en la casa, quítate los zapatos y ponte pantuflas.
Por favor, en la casa, quítese los zapatos y póngase pantuflas.
Please take your shoes off and put on slippers in the house. - Cuando nieva uso botas.
I wear boots when it’s snowing. - Ponte las zapatillas y vamos a jugar baloncesto.
Put on your sneakers and let’s go play basketball. - ¡Ten cuidado! Tienes los cordones desatados.
¡Tenga cuidado! Tiene los cordones desatados.
Be careful! Your shoe laces are untied.
Ropa interior: Underwear
Now let’s look at vocabulary for what you wear under everything else: ropa interior (underwear); unos calzoncillos (underpants); una camiseta (interior) (an undershirt); unos calzones (boxers); unos calzones, unas bragas (panties); un sostén, un sujetador (a bra).
- Necesito comprar ropa interior nueva.
I need to buy new underwear. - Tengo que lavar la ropa, no tengo calzones limpios.
I need to do laundry, I don’t have any clean underpants. - Ella usa sostén y calzones.
She wears a bra and panties. - Él siempre usa calzones/boxers.
He always wears boxers. - Yo duermo en calzones/boxers y camiseta.
I sleep in boxers and an undershirt.
Esta camisa es demasiado pequeña. This shirt is too small.
Here’s some vocabulary that you can use to talk about clothing:
- ¿Cuánto calzas? ¿Qué talla de zapatos usas?
¿Cuánto calza? ¿Qué talla de zapatos usa?
What size shoe do you wear? - ¿Usa(s) la talla pequeña, mediana, grande o extra grande?
Do you wear a small, a medium, a large, or an extra-large? - Esta camisa es demasiado grande/pequeña/ajustada/suelta.
This shirt is too big/small/tight/loose. - Estos pantalones no me quedan.
These pants don’t fit. - Estas zapatillas me quedan muy bien.
These sneakers fit very well. - Este suéter es cálido y cómodo.
This sweater is warm and comfortable. - Estos zapatos me lastiman los pies.
These shoes hurt my feet! - Esa chaqueta te queda muy bien.
That jacket looks really good on you. - Esos pantalones no te quedan bien.
Those pants don’t look good on you. - Esa camisa no combina con esos pantalones.
That shirt doesn’t match those pants.
Me encanta esta tela. I love this fabric!
Finally, let’s look at some vocabulary related to fabrics, designs, and more: el algodón (cotton); la seda (silk); la lana (wool); el cuero, la piel (leather); unas rayas (stripes); los lunares (polka dots); unos cuadros (plaid); un estampado (pattern); un botón (a button); de manga corta (short-sleeved); de manga larga (long-sleeved); una cremallera, un cierre (a zipper); una hebilla (a belt buckle).
- Me gusta la camisa de rayas.
I like the striped shirt. - No me gustan las camisas de cuadros.
I don’t like plaid shirts. - Su blusa tiene un estampado de flores.
Her blouse has a floral pattern. - Ella lleva una falda de lunares.
She’s wearing a shirt with polka dots. - ¿De qué tela está hecha esa camisa?
What fabric is that shirt made of? - Yo solo uso algodón.
I only wear cotton. - Mi suéter de lana es muy cálido.
My wool sweater is very warm. - La blusa de seda es hermosa, pero costosa.
The silk blouse is beautiful, but expensive! - ¿Va(s) a usar/llevar una camisa de manga corta o de manga larga?
Are you going to wear a short-sleeved shirt or a long-sleeved shirt? - ¡Se me salió un botón!
My button came off! - ¡Tiene(s) la cremallera abierta!
Your zipper is open!
