In this post we’ll cover basic Japanese vocabulary and expressions related to the weather.
空 sora: The sky
Let’s start with some basic vocabulary.
- 太陽 taiyou sun
- 雲 kumo cloud
- 空 sora sky
- 風 kaze wind
- 雨 ame rain
- 雪 yuki snow
- 嵐 arashi storm
- 雷 kaminari thunder, lightning
天気はどうですか？ Tenki wa doudesu ka? What’s the Weather Like?
Here are some basic expressions that you can use to describe typical weather.
- {今日・週末}の天気はどうですか。
{Kyou/shuumatsu} no tenki wa dou desu ka.
What’s the weather like today/this weekend? - いい天気です。
Ii tenki desu.
It’s a beautiful day. - 晴れです。
Hare desu.
It’s sunny. - 暑いです。
Atsui desu.
It’s hot. - 寒いです。
Samui desu.
It’s cold. - くもりです。
Kumori desu.
It’s cloudy. - 風が強いです。
Kaze ga tsuyoi desu.
It’s windy. - 雨が降っています。
Ame ga futte imasu.
It’s raining. - 雪が降っています。
Yuki ga futte imasu.
It’s snowing. - 嵐です。
Arashi desu.
There’s a storm. - 湿気が多いです。
Shikke ga ooi desu.
It’s humid.
暑すぎます！Atsusugimasu! It’s too hot!
- 今日は暑すぎます！
Kyou wa atsusugimasu!
It’s too hot today. - ジメジメしています。
Jimejime shiteimasu.
It’s very humid. - 汗をかいています。
Ase o kaiteimasu.
I’m sweating. - エアコンをつけてください！
Eakon o tsukete kudasai!
Put the air-conditioner on! - 暖かい気候が大好きです。
Atatakai kikō ga daisuki desu.
I love/really like warm weather.
外は寒いですね！Soto wa samui desu ne! It’s Cold Outside!
- 寒いです。
Samui desu.
It’s cold. - 凍えるほど寒いです。
Kogoeru hodo samui desu.
It’s freezing! - 雪が降っています。
Yuki ga futteimasu.
It’s snowing. - みぞれが降っています。
Mizore ga futteimasu.
It’s sleeting. - 今週は猛吹雪になります。
Konshuu wa moufubuki ni narimasu.
We’re going to have a blizzard this week. - 寒さで震えています！
Samusa de furuete imasu!
I’m shivering! - 雪が大好きです。
Yuki ga daisuki desu.
I love/really like snow.
