In this post we’ll talk about clothing in Italian.
Indosso una maglietta nera. I’m wearing a black shirt.
Let’s start with the basics: abiti (clothes); una camicia (a shirt); i pantaloni (pants); i jeans (jeans); una maglietta (a tee shirt); una cintura (a belt); indossare (to wear); vestirsi (to get dressed); spogliarsi (to get undressed); mettersi una maglietta (to put on a shirt), togliersi una maglietta (to take off a shirt).
- Indosso una camicia bianca.
I’m wearing a white shirt. - Indosso sempre i jeans nel fine settimana.
I always wear jeans on the weekend. - Indosso jeans e maglietta.
I’m wearing jeans and a tee shirt.
- Questi jeans sono troppo grandi. Ho bisogno di una cintura.
These jeans are too big. I need a belt. - Mi metto una maglietta.
I’m putting on a shirt. - Mi tolgo i jeans.
I’m taking off my jeans. - Mi vesto ogni mattina.
I get dressed every morning. - Mi tolgo i vestiti prima di andare a letto.
I take my clothes off before bed.
È una bella camicetta. That’s a nice blouse.
Now let’s look at some more vocabulary for less casual clothing: un abito (a dress); una gonna (a skirt); una camicetta (a blouse); un abito da uomo (a man’s suit); un vestito da donna (a woman’s suit); una cravatta (a tie); una giacca (a suit jacket); uno smoking (a tuxedo); un abito da sposa (a wedding dress).
- Di solito indossa una gonna e una camicetta a lavoro.
She usually wears a skirt and a blouse at work. - Indossa una gonna nera e una camicetta bianca.
She’s wearing a black skirt and a white blouse. - Di solito indossa giacca e cravatta a lavoro.
He usually wears a suit and tie at work. - Il suo vestito rosso è bellissimo.
Her red dress is beautiful. - Ha un sacco di abiti blu.
He has a lot of blue suits. - È un evento formale, quindi indossa uno smoking.
It’s a formal event, so he’s wearing a tuxedo. - La sposa indossa un bellissimo abito da sposa.

Now let’s look at some clothing you may wear when it’s cold: un maglione (a sweater); una felpa (a sweatshirt); un cappotto (a coat); una giacca (a jacket); i guanti (gloves); i guantini (mittens); una sciarpa (a scarf); un cappello (a hat); un impermeabile (a raincoat); un ombrello (an umbrella); una felpa col cappuccio (a hoodie).
- Indosso un maglione quando fa freddo.
I put on a sweater when it’s chilly. - Posso prendere in prestito una felpa col cappuccio?
Can I borrow a hoodie? - Porterò la mia giacca. Potrebbe fare freddo stasera.
I’m going to bring my jacket. It may be chilly tonight. - Indossa sempre una giacca di jeans / una giacca di pelle / una giacca da motociclista.
He always wears a jeans jacket / a leather jacket / a motorcycle jacket. - Indosso un cappotto, un cappello e una sciarpa quando fa freddo.

When the weather is hot, you probably want to know how to say: pantaloncini (shorts); un costume da bagno (a bathing suit); un bikini (a bikini); una canotta/canottiera (a tank top); occhiali da sole (sunglasses); un cappello/cappellino da baseball (a baseball cap).
- Fa molto caldo oggi, quindi indosso dei pantaloncini.
It’s really hot today, so I’m wearing shorts. - Indosso il costume da bagno quando vado in spiaggia/piscina.
I put on a bathing suit when I go to the beach/pool. - Lui indossa il costume da bagno e lei indossa un bikini.
He’s wearing swimming trunks, and she’s wearing a bikini. - Indossa sempre canottiere in estate.
He always wears tank tops in the summer. - C’è il sole. Hai bisogno dei tuoi occhiali da sole?

Please take your shoes off and put on slippers in the house. - Indosso gli stivali quando nevica.

La biancheria intima Underwear
Now let’s look at vocabulary for what you wear under everything else: la biancheria intima (underwear); le mutande (underpants); una maglietta (an undershirt); i boxer/ le mutande a pantaloncino (boxers); le mutandine (panties); un reggiseno (a bra).
- Ho bisogno di comprare mutanda nuove.
I need to buy new underwear. - Devo fare il bucato, non ho mutande pulite.
I need to do laundry, I don’t have any clean underpants. - Indossa reggiseno e mutandine.
She wears a bra and panties. - Indossa sempre i boxer.
He always wears boxers. - Dormo in boxer e canottiera.
I sleep in boxers and an undershirt.
Questa maglietta è troppo piccola. This shirt is too small.
Here’s some vocabulary that you can use to talk about clothing:
- Che numero di scarpe porti?
What size shoe do you wear? - Indossi una piccola, una media, una grande o una extra large?
Do you wear a small, a medium, a large, or an extra large? - Questa maglietta è troppo grande/piccola/attillata/larga.
This shirt is too big/small/tight/loose. - Questi pantaloni non mi/ti stanno.
These pants don’t fit me/you. - Queste scarpe da ginnastica mi/ti calzano molto bene.
These sneakers fit very well. - Questo maglione è caldo e confortevole.
This sweater is warm and comfortable. - Queste scarpe mi fanno male ai piedi!
These shoes hurt my feet! - Quella giacca ti sta davvero bene.
That jacket looks really good on you. - Quei pantaloni non ti stanno bene.
Those pants don’t look good on you. - Quella maglietta non si abbina a quei pantaloni.
That shirt doesn’t match those pants.
Adoro questo tessuto! I love this fabric!
Finally, let’s look at some vocabulary related to fabrics, designs, and more: il cotone (cotton); la seta (silk); la lana (wool); la pelle (leather); le strisce (stripes); i pois (polka dots); un motivo (pattern); un bottone (a button); a maniche corte (short-sleeved); a maniche lunghe (long-sleeved); una cerniera (a zipper); una fibbia della cintura (a belt buckle).
- Mi piace la maglia a righe.
I like the striped shirt. - La sua camicetta ha un motivo floreale.
Her blouse has a floral pattern. - Indossa una maglietta a pois.
She’s wearing a shirt with polka dots. - Di che tessuto è fatta quella maglietta?
What fabric is that shirt made of? - Indosso solo cotone.
I only wear cotton. - Il mio maglione di lana è molto caldo.
My wool sweater is very warm. - La camicetta di seta è bella, ma costosa!
The silk blouse is beautiful, but expensive! - Indossi una maglietta a maniche corte o una maglietta a maniche lunghe?
Are you wearing a short-sleeved shirt or a long-sleeved shirt? - Mi si è staccato il bottone!
My button came off! - La tua cerniera è aperta!
Your zipper is open!
